We survive
Both certified divers and NO shark bites... Hi all,
We are stuck in Carins!! for a month, only joking. A few days maybe the road south is 3m under water. So we are ready to move south after our adventures here.
Where do I start we have been busy!!. The first five days we hired a car to explore the area to the north of Cairns, Daintree, Cape Tribulation, and Port Douglas. After picking up our sports car (not) at lunch time we headed north to a lovely spot at Palm Cove for lunch, avoiding the rain showers and jelly fish (no swiming in the sea here due to Box jellyfish-deadly ouch). From here a short drive took us closer to the rainforest and our nights accomodation at Port Douglas, a pleasent walk along the four mile beach and through the town was cool. Up early the next morning to make the most of it then on to Daintree this area was very humid, I did not think I had a sweat problem till I came up here!! As for Catherine pooey!! We had a couple of nice stops at Cape Kimberly for a short walk around the Rainforest and morning biscuits at Cow Bay. All
Our Car
Here is our weapon of a car! Simon really suited it! the beaches now are very narrow and back on to the rainforest and mangrove trees, are a real sight. Another few hours in the car and we make it to Cape Tribulation, this is as far north as you can go in a sports car such as ours! No it really is the end of civilisation. The Beach house was our night spot tonight, 30m from the beach deep in the forest. So you guessed it LOTS AND LOTS of weird creatures sounds and scary things! Much to Catherine's delight, even the crickets are the size of your hand and make the loudest noise ever! A walk along the beach to the point and a nice dinner at the bistro, ended a really enjoyable day.
Day 3 started early with our kayak trip along the coast with our mad jungle boy instructor, to spot some turtles, sharks, and salt water croc's. You get the theme so far on the trip go out find some dangerous animals any where we can. The ocean, the pub etc then Catherine gets her own back by eating them, whats next I wonder!! From here we cruised the Daintree river and stopped at Mossman gorge
G'day
Simon on four mile beach in Port Douglas. on the way to our next evening in Kuranda.
On day four we stopped early at a coffee factory for a morning coffee well 21 actually, enough coffee and chocolate to keep me going for a few hours!! Next stops were at the Tinaroo dam and the Milanda Falls completed our little road trip then it was time to make it back to Cairns for our next adventre.
Diving the great barrier reef.. A real highlight of the trip and something we had both been looking forward to. We decided to do it properly so we booked on to a five day PADI open water course, with a very good company who were recommened to us. This involved 2 days of long sessions in the pool and class room followed by Three day living and diving on the reef....
So here goes lots of theroy on the first day then following a medical and swimming tests we were ready to get kitted up. We were taught loads of skills in the pool some of which were quite demading but all required. Along with all the hand signals (An important one for Catherine one finger above the head- I am doing
Cape Tribulation
As Simon drove I concentrated on the road signs! a wee keep clear!!! which she went on to use a lot!!) So a second day and more skills and an exam and we were ready for the ocean. (It was like being back at school.)
5:30 am and we are on the boat for Great Barrier Reef, this is it time to remember our training and put it into practice. So we did four dives testing all the skills and learning more, including taking all kit off, inlcuding masks, and sharing air all in 12m of water scary.. It was all really fun though, and we both passed wicked. We are both open water divers, time to go dive together without and instructor and enjoy the reef. What an amazing place most of the time its like diving in a fish tank AMAZING. We also did a night dive with an instructor an awsome experience and you can actually see so much. On our dives we spotted the important ones turtles, reef sharks, rays, NEMO, and thousands of other fish and coral. It was super cool, now we are qualified we can dive sites anywhere in the world without instructors in up to 18m of water, we can't wait
Sea Kayaking
In search of wildlife... We Kayak to get a better look at Cape Tribulation. for the next site.
So its goodbye from me and Catherine and i hope you enjoy our latest adventures
