Wow! Sometimes I just LOVE the marvels of modern technology! There are only three things I miss about the US while I am over here, and thanks to technical wunderkinds behind the scenes everywhere, I am able to surmount all these obstacles now!

I miss, in this order:
1) my family
2) Georgetown friends & Hoya basketball
3) ESPN and 24-hour-sports-coverage

So guess what?

SKYPE allows me to speak with (and SEE) my family whenever we want to talk. And it's free! It also doubles as my MSN with my friends here in Paris, so that saves on the cell phone bill : )
ALL long-term travellors-abroad should invest in Skype. Buy their stock, too, if they have it!

Second, GU Hoya basketball can be listened to on streaming broadband, live, and occasionally downloaded from a Podcast (if I wasn't too cheap to pay for it). Unfortunately, the games all start at about 1 am here, but, oh well...

Third, I just discovered something simply wonderful last night: the NORTH AMERICAN SPORTS NETWORK!!! An international cable channel (which you can find in any self-respecting Anglo bar in Paris) which plays everything from ice hockey to American football to tennis. Last night, life was perfect: I went to the Moosehead Pub for a Sciences Po Transatlantic Society party, and low and behold...the NHL ALLSTAR GAME was on!!!! Can you say "heaven"? That totally made my night. I'd been watching free NHL.com channel interviews and stuff from the All-Star weekend all day, but they didn't put the game online...and then, voila, there is was! I think the gods took pity on me. I have been severely hockey-deprived over here (possibly a saving grace, considering the Flyers' season) so this was just totally awesome. It's the little things, sometimes....

Also, the Moosehead is one of my new favorite bars (that, and Objectif Lune) because it also had the Aussie Open on, and an Eric Lindros jersey in the window!!! OK, so not my favorite player, but still...a hockey jersey...in Paris. Robyn = happy.

So I just had to share my technological happiness with everyone. As long as it all continues to function, I am content. I now know where I can watch hockey every weekend. I forsee more trips to the Moosehead!

So, that's all the news. I'm off to a diner de conference (class dinner) at the Restaurant de la Mosquee with my Monde arabe conference classmates and professor. In the 5e, near the Grande Mosquee (Great Mosque.) Looking forward to it!

Over and out.

PS It's offical...I'm going to Istanbul, Turkey for 5 days with Bryony in February. Whoo hoo! And a trip to Eastern Europe (Slovenia, Budapech, and maybe Zhagreb (sp?) is in the works for April...I am so lucky. Can't WAIT to blog about those trips!
