Cook Inlet
This is part of the drive from Anchorage to Seward. We flew into Anchorage Airport on Thursday 16th June. It was a beautiful day. we wandered around and watched a band in the park then had great Sushi. WE arrived just in time for the summer Solstice weekend so it was light till 12pm. We meet a German Girl at the hostel and she offered to take us to Seward the nest day.
It was a lovely drive to Seward sown through the cook inlet. We tried to spot some Beluga Whales in the Cook Inlet. We thought we saw some one breathing but it could have been a wave. We also stopped off at a big game refuge park and saw some Moose, Grizzly Bears, Bison, Elk, Caribou, Fox, Bald Eagle and an owl up close.
The nest day at Seward we went out on a Wild life adventure cruise. It was really bad weather so was pretty Fun and rocky on the boat. We saw Some Humpback Whales, Dolphins, Heaps of birds. My Favourite bird was the Puffins. We stopped at the Aialik Glacier for about Half an hour to watch Ice Calving. It's when big chunks of ice fall off the end of the Glacier. It
Beluga Whale
This is what we wanted to see.... was pretty cool.
Kris took us to Homer the day. It was a pretty cool little town we went out to watch a local band play and they where really good. Apparently the guy playing the double bass and harmonica was Jules' brother. We came home at about 1am and it wasn't dark at all, it was more like dusk. Really weired.
The next day (Monday) was probably our craziest day yet. We said good bye to Kris and Caught a bus to Coopers Landing. It's kind of in the middle of no where and found out the camp site was full to the brim. There wasn't even room for to girls and out little tent.....we where like SHIT! what do we do???
Luck came our way in the form of two guys from Utah. They took us Salmon fishing then drove us to Seward where we found a very empty camp ground right in town.
Phew!!!
This is getting to long but I need to tell you about one more thing. On our last day in Seward Kate and I decided to go on a hike. We thought is hike up Mt Marathon would take
Grizzly
This Grizzly was at the game park. I recon I could say I saw this wild but I wouldn't have even tried to get that close in the wild. about 2-3hrs but after 5hrs of hiking, scrambling, slipping, climbing, sliding, losing the trail, Falling and clapping so the Bears wouldn't eat us, we made it back to the camp ground. We where very dirty and tired but glad we did it.
That night we caught the train back to Anchorage and a flight back to Vancouver the next day.
Alaska was awesome but so big we only saw the Kenali Peninsula. If any of you make it up there I would recommend spending a longer time there.
Take care
Love
Jo
