The first view !
This is what just popped up in front of us on the way into Sedona after a rather boring trip. Well, the toilet dilemma turned out to be a simple repair which was surprising to both Mike and me b/c these "little" jobs usually turn into nightmare jobs! We did get to the Best Buy only to find that we have to order a new power cord for the DTV receiver. So we called our trusty and wonderful neighbor, the mayor of Hobart, to take a few moments from his very serious profession to send us our power cord from the house! Poor guy. Have had to call him to also send title to our vehicles b/c we also forgot them. Necessary to enter Mexico!
Today we got up early and set out to visit the city of Sedona b/c everyone kept telling us to NOT miss this gem! We had high expectations but as we got closer to it, we began to wonder b/c it looked pretty much like the rest of AZ, rocky and dry but a little greener and much higher in elevation. We were beginning to be a little disappointed when, almost out of nowhere, arose these most gorgeous red rock boulders and monoliths!!! Wow!!
Sedona is about 2 hours north of Phoenix. It is
situated at the mouth of the Oak Creek Canyon, a beautiful 16 mile gorge in the middle of Arizona's Red Rock Country. I wondered why it looked somewhat familiar even though I had never been there. Hollywood has made the area its backdrop for many years since the 1920's! Mike and I both agree that its views are a close second to those we experienced in the Grand Canyon many years ago. Sedona is said to be one of the most beautiful places in the state and I am not one to argue. USA Weekend has named it as the #1 vacation spot in the US.
We first visited the Chapel of the Holy Cross which appears to appears to shoot up from two spectacular red rock formations. It is a popular destination for visitors. It is a Roman Catholic Chapel and features a little gift shop as well. Because of the high elevation (4500 feet), it was a little cool. We continued to be awed by the red color and the contrasts w/ the green and rock. We saw the famous rock formations known as Cathedral Rock and the Bell Rock which are featured here in my pics.
We also took some scenic drives that were breathtaking! I cannot put into words a way to describe the magnificence and wonder of this phenomenal creation by Mother Nature. The area offers also biking, hiking and great photographic opportunities. WE both really enjoyed this day trip and it was worth the drive!
And of course there is the tourism!!! The little town of Sedona is a tourist trap! One little store even bragged that it served the SAME fudge recipe as that of Mackinaw Island!! Oh, NO!!!!! Another FUDGIE!!! Lots of stores selling high priced souvenirs and clothing! Mike and I agree that these places must be avoided like the plague!! But we were there and took pics!! LOL. On the way back down, there is a very cute little shop selling all kinds of stuff, mainly from Mexico. The prices were absolutely ridiculous!! OMG!!!!! I couldn't sleep at night if I knew how badly I was ripping folks off!!! Example: a CANDLE CHIMINEA!!!!! 10 inches high!!! $28!!!!!! Then there were these cute ceramic red and green pepper bunches--$38!!! Not even as nice as the ones that I got at the Dollar Store in Bonita Springs for $1!!! So,
Cathedral Rock
This is taken from the Chapel. Notice the small home below. It is for sale if you are intereste see, there IS something to be said about my dollar stores!!! Ha ha!!
We spent the better part of the day touring the area of Sedona. By the end of the day, we both had seen enough "red" and were tired so we headed back to the RV! All in all, though, a GREAT day!
