One of the taxis we were in had one TV screen in front, and one in the back! A NBA game was on with Chinese commentators... very optimistic ones too.
Hi all,

Been keeping busy for the past couple of days - yesterday we went to a street market (forget the name!) which sold lots of fake designer bags and accessories as well as some clothing. Had to bargain hard for good prices, but the rewards were great - "Louis Vuitton" sunglasses for Candy started off at RMB$220 but went down to $50 which is ~CDN$8. I got two small "Coach" handbags for ~CDN$8 as well, and some other things for gifts for my lady friends - you'll just have to see what you get when I return 😉 We also went to the Shanghai Science and Technology Centre which wasn't great and a ripoff for RMB$60 (~CDN$10)... it's sort of like Science World but more technical and dry. I've probably just outgrown things like that...

Visited the Shanghai Museum this morning and it was much better, and Candy got a good laugh when she got student admission pricing with her UBC ID and I had to pay full adult price since I forgot to bring my SFU ID abroad. Arggh! There were exhibits for Chinese pottery, bronze, sculpture, painting, calligraphy, jade, and ethnic minorities. There's usually a coin

One of the prettier ones we saw at the Shanghai Museum
exhibit as well but it was closed. A lot of the pieces are thousands of years old and I keep marveling about the excellent condition of most pieces. Photography (not flash) is allowed in most parts of the museum so I saw lots of people holding their digicams as close as possible to the case to capture the detail. I tried to take some photos but they don't do the pieces justice. We spent a few hours in there and loitered in the tea room as well... fabulous time!

In the afternoon we went to Nanjing Dong Lu (Nanjing West Road) since it's the equivalent of Robson and is completely closed off to pedestrians. However, I was totally disappointed by the shopping. The prices were superinflated compared to what we could get at the markets, and the clothes weren't even stylish - most were basic pieces like tees and capris. Not as many fashionable people around so I couldn't take any nice photos (sorry Matt), but I'll try to take some when I'm walking around my neighbourhood in Pudong since it's more like office downtown - maybe that's why people are dressed up here.

That's all for now,

Very elegant gallery, and the lights have motion detectors - they remain dimmed until you stand in front of the piece, and the lights slowly come on. Very clever!
will blog more later, enjoy the photos!

Apparently THE shopping street in Shanghai but I wasn't impressed. Tons of people, very hot and crowded even without the taxis, bicycles, and cars. Counted four McDonald's along the street... mmm!

Usually the first room in a house centuries ago, used to greet visitors and display the fancy treasures and paintings. Chairs don't look very comfy though!
