We are still in the Tucson area at the Prince of Tucson RV Park. We spent Saturday doing laundry, getting some groceries and just generally touring around the area. It is a nice area and there is a lot of building going on here as well. Much of the construction is encroaching on the edge of the mountains and, as a result the mountain lion has become quite aggressive , even stalking humans!! Well, it WAS their land first, don't you know? Poor things!!! They really are beautiful animals but I would prefer to see them at a distance!
Today we went out to the Sabino Canyon area in the Coronado National Forest just NE of the city of Tucson. It is located in the Santa Catalina Ranger District, on the edge of this expanding urban residential development (which is upsetting the lion kitties!!). The area offers superb scenery including steep rock cliffs, foothills covered with desert vegetation. Biking ,hiking, walking and photography are very popular activities here. Since we had already done our 3 mile walk, we decided to take the shuttle into the canyon, do some hiking/walking and then catch the shuttle back out. Well, we ended up
walking about 2 more miles, missing the shuttle stop. I am not sure how we did that but in any case, we saw some great scenery, beautiful cactus plants and a variety of other desert vegetation. I don't remember the names of ALL of them but we were especially impressed by the Saguaro cactus. It takes like 200 years for it to reach its full height of some 40+ feet tall! They don't even grow their "branches" until they are between 95-100 years old!! I listened really well, didn't I? I have other pictures too here but I won't bore you with all the details that I learned on my hike in the wilderness!!
I was a little leery to be walking around because when we first entered, we were handed this two-sided paper about the "Problem" Mountain Lions. How to avoid an attack, what to do if you ARE attacked!!! I guess there have been numerous sitings of the animal. As I said, I would not at all mind seeing them at a FAR distance, but that is about it!
Tomorrow we leave for the Phoenix area and will then catch up with Frank and Carol at
their Sun City home! We are anxious to see them and their new home!
