This place is crazy!! We arrived safely on Thurs 7th Dec and were picked up from the airport and driven to our hotel. You soon realize what a bustling city this is and the drivers are all crazy - they have to be as there are so many cars on the road. After strolling around on our first night we got a tuk-tuk to take us back to our hotel for 200 baht. Thinking that was a good deal, it actually should’ve cost 20 baht. Not the first time we were conned. Jet lag meant that our sleeping pattern for the first few days was all over the place. We woke around 2pm on Friday and walked around in the extreme heat until we found the boxing stadium. We got ringside seats and sat for 4 hours watching these little guys beat each other up while the crowd behind us were screaming and shouting - mostly because they were frantically trying to place bets. After getting a picture with the world champion following his victory, we went to a night bazaar for dinner. Up at 6am on Saturday, we took a river taxi the entire length of the river and back (about an hour each way for 30p) while stopping off a couple of times along the way. After a siesta, Saturday night was the first time we went out drinking. After hitting a few bars in Khao San Road, we took taxis to a couple of late night bars/clubs. Sunday was spent just lying in bed and snoozing periodically - it’s a great feeling to not have a care in the world and with nothing that you have to do. We ventured into the red light district on Sunday night and you certainly need to be on guard. After watching Chelsea Vs Arsenal (one of many football matches we have watched in the early hours of the morning) we found an “interesting” late night bar. On Monday we moved from the luxury of our hotel to a hostel near Khao San Road. Up at 6am on Tuesday, we took a train to an old city (Nakhon Pathom). It cost 15p for a 70 minute train journey. Walking around this old city, there was no sign of any westerners and after an hour or so, it was really quite sad how excited we got when we found a Tesco Express. After visiting an old temple and being blessed by a monk, we returned to Bangkok on the bus. Another night was spent drinking and ‘getting to know’ other travelers. On Wednesday we visited the Grand Palace - quite impressive and photos don’t really do it justice. Went for a one hour traditional Thai massage. A couple of quiet beers on Wednesday night turned into getting home at 5am after watching another game of football. We moved to a nicer hostel on Thursday. Also went for another massage - this time a 2 hour oil massage - amazing, it puts you to sleep. Thursday night started on Khao San Road with a 'bucket' cocktail. This was just what we needed to liven up and get in the swing of things. A taxi to Sukhumvit soon followed where we found Cheap Charlies, a bar stand that served cheap drink and attracts expats. A short walk took us to a more seedy strip of bars. After going to a late night bar, we got home around 6am when I decided it would be a good idea to try an extremely hot curry. Not a lot was achieved on Friday - just getting ready to leave for Myanmar on Saturday morning. I’m not sure what access I will have to email/phones so I would like to wish you all a Happy Xmas and I hope to have some interesting stuff to report when I return. Happy Holidays!!!!!
