Hi all - me again.. well, i've had a very busy week or so...
The wildlife day that i told you about in my last entry - was massive! I was so tired at the end of it.. got dropped back at hostel at 12.30 am after having been picked up at 8am.. its a long day for a girl who loves her sleep as much as me... haha
So - pick up at 8 and then off to Maru Wildlife Sanctuary where i played with orphaned baby wombats - hand fed Kangaroo's, played with dingoes and had my picture taken with a koala.. that was
NOT happy at being woken up.. after that we headed off to San Remo where every day at 11.30 a local fisherman's company feeds the pelicans - these birds are
FEISTY and they really fight over whose going to get the fish... so much so that one even crapped in another ones mouth... whats that all about????
After the pelican episode its time to head over to Churchill Island which is basically now just a heritage farm - and the views of Western Port Bay are amazing. A ranger there -
originally from Glasgow - took us around, explained the history and said that the farm is still run as it would be in the old days - no modern conveniences at all... stuff that.. give me a tractor!!! The ranger was really funny and after joing us for a nice steak pie we headed off to the Koala Conservation Centre.. where the ranger there decided to scare me senseless by telling me all about the very poisonous Copperback snakes that lived in the grassland we were about to walk through... me in shorts and flips-flops - everyone else in jeans and trainers.... wench!! needless to say no snakes appeared and at the first sign of a koala i forgot all about this possible threat anyway! They are so slow and lazy and just sleep all day (Sounds like an ideal life to me!) and the mothers and babies were just so cute i was tempted to smuggle one out with me..
A short trip later led us to "The Nobbies" a rock formation between Western Port Bay and the Bass Straight.. it was so windy and cold but because of that the sea looked amazing and i got over
excited and took a ridiculous amount of pictures - you know how i love the sea!!.... a short scenic drive down the coast of the Summerland Peninsula got us ready for the eco-trip and the Penguin Parade... at dusk about 200 miniature penguins come inland and walk up the sand dunes into their little burrows.. it is so amazing to watch - and apart from my minor run in with a rather obnoxious German lady it was an amazing evening.. i bought loads of souvenirs and had my picture taken with the penguins.. i think now i'll have one of them instead of a koala??!!!
On the Sunday we had a BBQ at Matt & Blanches - a quality evening with far too much food and not enough drink - which was made up for last night after another shindig at Chez Blanchio's.. after which David, Kay and i decided to check out the live rock bands that play every weekend at the hostel i am staying at - it was so funny - just watching some of the musicians who were about as rock and roll as a wet fish and the over zealous security guard that threw
out anyone that caught his eye, had us in hysterics.... finally crawled into bed about 2.30 this morning and texted as many people as i could before i fell asleep... sorry to all those that got random texts??!!
Also spent a couple of days in Ballarat and Sovereign Hill - an old township from the Gold Mining era.. this place in genuinely amazing ! It was pretty quiet being the run up to Christmas which meant that i got to see everything and everywhere without lining up but also meant that the place lacked a certain amount of atmosphere.. but this was soon put to rights when the redcoats marched down the street and proceeded to carry out a musket fire display.. I stayed overnight at the lodge and had dinner in one of the oldern day hotels and after that watched "Blood on the Southern Cross" a sound and light show about the uprising of the miners.. my favourite bit was when they burnt the hotel down ! (I'm such an arsonist!)
Next on the agenda is Dracula's this evening, Neighbours night tommorrow and the on Tuesday David, Kay and I are going to pick up our....
WICKED CAMPER !!!! yeah - we're spending a week in a camper travelling the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians.. i am so excited - i finally feel like i'm being a real traveller! I've had a good time in the city - but i think 6-7 weeks is just too long.. not enough to keep you going and so i've been lounging and shopping !!.. so its good to feel like i am doing something now - and doing it with some great people.. its a shame that Blanche and Matt can't come too - but they are in full time work.. still.. its going to be great.. and then after that i fly into Sydney on the 20th and meet up with Ria.. who has been hilariously planning Christmas and sleeping arrangements... 18 in a 1 bed apartment on Christmas day is going to be interesting!!
Well- i'll write again after the road trip - bye for now
Love Lucy xxx
