The MuntenThe MuntenThe Munten

Our stay in Weert, the Netherlands
Our stay at the Munten was great. The host was very helpful, the room was large, well appointed and very clean and the bed was super comfortable. We even had a special shed out the back to house the bikes overnight. Before we left we had a hearty breakfast and was offered what we hadn't eaten to take with us for the day - definitely getting a 10 out of 10 rating on Booking.com!!!

We were on the road by 8:30am with just on 60kms to travel for the day. We meandered our way back to a canal for about half the days ride. It is just so easy to ride along the canals, especially in Belgium and the Netherlands. The cycle paths are really well maintained and cycling is part of everyday life for them. We have a very long way to go in Australia in that regard!

Our destination for the day was Erkelenz in Germany. Again, there was no sign when we crossed the border but we did notice two brothels within 100m of each other just over the border. I'm not sure if that says more about the Germans or the Dutch?

For the little bit of Germany I've seen so far, the cycle paths are still good but not as good as Belgium and the Netherlands, We also noticed (very quickly) that cars don't stop to let cycles cross at crossings like they did in Belgium and the Netherlands. So, from a cycling culture point of view I think it's been as good as it gets and it's all down hill from here.

We made excellent time in the morning, with a short mid morning stop, we still reached our accommodation just after 12:30pm. We are in a two bedroom apartment (yes, I know I said we'd stay in hotels now but this one looked so good), and it is sensational. It's about 2km out of town but that's a small price to pay for the space we have for the day.

Tomorrow we travel to Cologne and include a rest day. It will be another shortish day of about 60kms.

Distance travelled today was 60kms.

Distance travelled so far is 1210kms.
