Greece tour

First time in Greece after many years wanting to visit.

Although I would rather have rented a boat and island hop, I don't have a sailing licence so I only visited Crete (not much unfortunately), Santorini, Milos and Athens.

First stop was Heraklion, where I visited the museum with its really good collection of Minoan pottery (a must go). I will come back to Crete one day and stay there for a couple of weeks as I didn't get to see much this time. I only did some diving in Agia Pelagia (a turistic spot that is not much worth visiting). After that, I took a speed boat to Santorini and under the burning 42 degree sun visited a few places in the island like Fira (the capital), Oia, Pyrgos and Akrotiri. The museum in Fira has nothing worth visiting, but Akrotiri ruins are impressive. I also tasted some wines from the island. I really liked a white wine called Nykteri (from the well known winery Santo Wines). The island was really crowded with tourists, cars, bikes and buses. I guess that I was not the right time to come at all.

Milos was very relaxing and the beaches are just incredible. As I couldn't rent a car to visit the island (fully booked), I paid for a tour on the Thalassitra boat and enjoyed a wonderful whole day of visiting Milos and nearby islands as Kimolos and Poliegos. We stoped at famous spots such as Glaronisia rocks or Kleftiko pirate caves. We bathed in clear blue beaches and enjoyed delicious greek food on board (I recommend this tour very much). I spent my last night in Milos drinking a greek alcohol called Raki (very good).

Athens was my last stop and unfortunately I had to visit its famous places under bad conditions because of wildfire smoke making it hard to breathe. I visited the Archaeological museum, the Acropolis and its museum, the Agora and the remains of the Temple of Olympian Zeus among other ancient ruins. I also had time to meet a greek local that took me to Piraeus to have a drink near the old port (very good spot) and also to a famous place among athenians called Teniako. I was also supposed to visit Delphi and Meteora on a tour but ended up shortening my trip to come back home to safety.

Next time, I will avoid summer 😊

Santorini view

Nice to read your Greece blog
We have been to Athens twice and loved it. But next time we visit Greece we need to go somewhere else because it feels like we've seen the most and the best of what there is to see in Athens now and going there again would mean that we see the same things all over again. Oh yes, we have also visited two islands on a charter trip a few years ago. So we have seen a little more. But Greece has so much more to offer so we just have to go back some day. /Ake
