It is Day 42 of California’s “shelter in place” order, and while these accommodations are pretty good, I’m getting tired of staying here.
Chez Kaj – 3 1/2 stars Location – 5 stars Chez Kaj is in a residential gated community, and in normal times, the location can’t be beat. The state beach (now closed) is about a mile away, there is a little shopping center across the street with a grocery store, and several little restaurants, many of which are closed due to Covid-19 . There is a train station within walking distance, though I wouldn’t want to walk it with luggage, and Amtrak is operating with a reduced schedule.
Cleanliness – 3 ½ stars While the bathroom is clean and there are always clean sheets and clean towels, sometimes the dinner dishes are still in the sink in the morning. Some of the less well used parts of the place are very dusty, and there are piles of books everywhere – on tables, on the floor, stacked on bookshelves. Of course, that means you are never at a loss for something to read.
Service – 4 stars I can’t complain,

Kalitta Air is a partner of Tex Sutton I can have pretty much anything I want, except a day at the beach or lunch at St. Tropez Bistro (closed.)
Value – 5 stars Absolutely the best value in town.
Mind you, I’m not complaining (much.) This pandemic has so many unknowns that I would rather they erred on the side of caution, though I wish they’d quit lumping me in the “elderly” at risk category. Except when it gets me in the grocery store early, then you can call me whatever you want.
I was set to go to Dubai for the UAE Derby the end of March. I own a tiny share of a horse named Tizamagician who had been invited to run in the UAE Derby at the Meydan Racecourse. I’ve heard Meydan is a pretty spectacular track, and I’ve never been to Dubai, so what better time to go than when I owned a piece of a horse running in a Dubai World Cup race.
However, on March 5, 2020 the Dubai Racing Club decided to hold the Derby without spectators, due to Covid-19 concerns. Bummer. No point of going all the way to Dubai for a race

Tizamagician left for Dubai on March 17, 2020. Horses are pretty routinely flown around the world for major races like the Breeders’ Cup and the Kentucky Derby, and as such there are airlines dedicated to equine passengers. One such is Tex Sutton Equine Transport, which flies “Air Horse One.” Tiz arrived in Dubai on the 19
th, had a roll in the hay and a snack, and settled in nicely. His regular exercise rider came along with him, so he had a familiar human with him.
But this was not to be; the Dubai Racing Club cancelled all the Dubai World Cup races on March 22
nd, and Tizamagician came on home on March 25
th.
Now if only horses got frequent flyer miles…
A tip of the hat to CaboChick, who gave me the idea for this entry.

Not bad! I would say being holed up in a “Chez” anything definitely has perks. Don’t worry you’ll be traveling to the UAE before you know it. In the meantime stay safe and well.
