Cuba Day 8. Monday 28 Jan

61km. 570m ascent 29 degrees cycled today.
An early start at 8.15 after deciding on plan D. The cause of much plan changing was the likely bad weather conditions following a tornado yesterday in Havana which left 3 dead and 176 injured. We eventually decided not to travel up the hills to Trinidad but to cycle around it. This was a very good choice of route since the wind was quite strong but on our tail on the undulating road. Whilst the day started with damp roads, and the necessary puddles, the cloud cleared somewhat and the sun shone on our backs as we headed south west. The road was the best so far with few potholes and fairly light traffic and we sailed along nicely until midday and Liz had a fall having caught husband Paul as she moved in for a passing lorry. This was a traumatic sight for us as she lay there in pain with a broken nose and the abundant blood which accompanies all cycling falls. After our five doctors had looked her over and delivered first aid she was taken to the hospital to be checked over and the broken nose was confirmed and more dressings applied. Thankfully she arrived vertical and smiling at our lodgings at 5pm, which we were very pleased about. I hate crashes, and am not too keen when it is me, but I don’t like to see people hurt. We are in a ’casa particulare’ for two nights now and ours is very nice with a nice girl host. I took yesterday’s washing out of my case which had not dried in Santa Clara and laid it on my bed and it had dried by the time I showered in the dry warm atmosphere. I don’t think it would ever dry further north in that humid climate. Today’s washing up on the roof terrace now blowing in the wind whilst I down a bottle of local brewed Cristal beer as darkness falls.
