In July 2017 we travelled to Kuala Lumpur for 6 nights with the kids – aged 10 and 7. Kuala Lumpur is a wonderful place for a family holiday. There is so much to do and you could easily spend a couple of weeks there.

Stay : ALOFT hotel – we booked ALOFT as we stay here all the time without kids. The room felt a little squeezy with 4 of us but we were barely in the room other than to sleep so it was good. The breakfast buffet is amazing and the kids loved it. The kids also loved the rooftop pool and we recommend this place for families.

On day 1 we arrived from Melbourne on a day flight with Air Asia. I had prebooked a family ticket with the KL Express train to get to the city. ALOFT is at KL Sentral Train Station (connected via a walkway in the Nu Sentral shopping centre). It is such a great location as you are connected to everywhere by a quick train ride. We arrived at the hotel around 5pm so we headed straight to the pool for a cool down swim and
relax before heading next door into NU Sentral shopping centre for dinner.

On day 2 we started with a huge buffet breakfast before heading out to the Petronas Towers. I had prebooked the 11.30am time slot online prior to leaving Australia so that we didnt have to worry about it upon arrival. It is so much easier than lining up first thing that morning to secure tickets. We took the metro train from KL Sentral to Petronas Towers . After our Petronas tour we has some lunch in the food court of the shopping centre underneath the towers and then we headed to the Petrosains Science Discovery Centre (deigned for kids). After purchasing your entry tickets you head off on the ‘Dark Ride’ through to the museum. This was one of our favourite parts, as was the SPEED section. There was lots of interactive displays for the kids to get involved in and they had a ball.

After the museum we decided to head to Chinatown so the kids could do some market shopping. It was so hot so we decided to sit down and have a cold drink. My husband asked where the toilet was and the man pointed up some stairs behind us. As he ran up the stairs, our son commented that something was on the stairs that ‘Dad kicked’. When ‘Dad’ got back we were dismayed to see his ankle bleeding. Turned out that as he was running up the stairs a huge rat was running down and had scratched his ankle. We then panicked a little not knowing if it was a rabies or other disease risk.

After a quick phone call home to a friend that was a Dr we got some disinfectant and headed back to the hotel. Back to the pool for sunset drinks before having dinner at Nando’s in Nu Sentral that night.

Day 3 we decided to head to KLCC Aquaria. We stopped in at a Doctors surgery on the way to discuss the rat scratch with a local doctor. They gave my husband a tetanus shot and we made an executive decision to NOT get the rabies shots! Nothing like playing Russian Roulette! LOL.

The Aquarium was great – one of the more worthwhile ones I have seen.

After we finished we walked through KLCC park looking for the free kids playground and waterpark. Upon finding it we were too hot to play on the playground as there was no shade (and it was a little rundown) and then when we found the waterpark it was closed for maintanence. Disappointed we decided to head back to the hotel for a swim. When we reached the bottom of Petronas Towers there was a large Police presence. As I am a Police Officer I approached one and we started chatting – turns out that they were doing an exercise for the upcoming SE Asian games. The kids had their photos taken with some of the police as well as their armoured vehicle nicknamed The Hurricane (as it goes through everything!).

Day 4 was KIDZANIA – another highly recommended kids activity in KL. We spent the whole day there and the kids still didn’t get to do it all. KidZania is an interactive world where they get to go to all the different places and dress up in different occupations like Police, Ambulance, Dentist, Pilot etc and roleplay. The whole place is amazing. Some of the more popular occupations you have to book in for and the day gets busier as it goes along.. the morning was more quiet. I highly recommend it. There is an adults only lounge you can escape to if needed for a break!

After KidZania we had dinner in the food court of Nu Sentral, another swim to cool down and an early night.

Day 5 – We decided to head to the Central Market for a look around and to do some shopping. The kids got henna tattoos and bought trinkets for their friends back home. Central Market is one train stop from KL Sentral so very easy to get to (same stop as Chinatown). We had a coffee and some Kaya Toast at Old Town White Coffee (one of our KL favourites). We then spent the rest of the day at the hotel lazing by the pool. Dinner was at Jalan Alor – we ate at Sai Woo which was pretty nice but I am thinking Jalan Alor is too touristy and expensive these days. We caught the monorail over which was a nightmare as it was way overcrowded and extremely uncomfortable. We decided to flag a taxi home after dinner.

Day 6 was our last day and we had intended on taking the children to Sunway Lagoon, but as they had been playing up a little we had made a decision to not spend the money. It was going to be an expensive day. That morning when we woke up the weather was cloudy with thunderstorms so the decision was easier! We had a lazy breakfast and the weather had started to fine up by late morning so we decided to jump on the KL Hop on Hop off bus and see what we could do along the way. It was soooo hot by this stage that we ended up jumping off at Petrona’s Towers and getting the train home to go to the pool. The kids didn’t really enjoy the bus – they were too bored.- I think it is a better activity for adults but it does stop at all the tourist hotspots. We spent the rest of our afternoon at the Pool before heading to the food court in Nu Sentral for dinner again (can’t beat spending $10AUD on a family of 4 for dinner!).

We had an early night as we were heading to Hoi An in Vietnam the next day. I highly recommend KL as a destination to take your children! It is clean, easy to get around, modern and there are stacks of things to do that are kid orientated!
