Helsinki
Hardys wine from Reynella costs a pretty penny here in Helsinki With Tish still recovering from her illness, Andrew stepped out into Helsinki by himself for the day checking out the harbours both north and south of our apartment which is located on Katajanokka, a peninsular on the east side of downtown Helsinki. There are lots of walking tours through our neighbourhood so it obviously has played a part in Helsinki’s past but the quality of apartment buildings here is second to none. Down the bottom of our street stands the Uspenskin Cathedral which has a grand viewing platform overlooking th north and south harbours. The Cathedral has an amazing dome and while compact inside, it was very busy with antiquities. The viewover the north harbour included the Helsinki Eye and a number of cruise ships and ferry’s docked for the day.
There was a large market place set up at the harbour, selling tourist Knick knacks as well as some local food - salmon soup, moose meatballs etc. The harbour was buzzing with activity despite constant drizzle requiring Andrew to procure a plastic poncho to stay dry. The public park stretches from the harbour to the downtown area and there are lots of monuments, sculptures and fountains between the two
Helsinki
South Harbour Helsinki with a cruise ship next to the Helsinki Eye - a great peaceful pedestrian link between two areas of hectic activity. after exploring the downtown area, Andrew returned to the Apartment and Tish was able to wonder out for a couple of hours visiting the harbour, public park and downtown area. There was a band playing in a bandstand in the public park and plenty of other street musicians along our walk.
We checked out the many island cruises around Helsinki and thought it best just to catch the local ferry out to Suoemlinna Island.
