Questions regarding current state of the transport system in/across Zimbabwe.
I'm currently in the early stages of planning for a trip to Southern Africa next month and am considering doing a loop from Jo'berg up through Zim via Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, and then back down through Botswana via Francistown and Gaberone. I'll probably be on my own and as with past trips in the area entirely dependent on public transport (e.g. trains, buses, coaches, taxis, etc.).
I have no issues about Botswana, but with the current situation in Zim, I'd love to hear from anyone with current (the last few months) experience. I know that a couple of coach companies run services along this route, and the train from Bulawayo to Vic falls is supposedly still operational, but I'd like to know what I can about the difference between theory and practice. Also, are there any problems crossing the borders (I'm a British national)?
If you have tips on accommodation in Bulawayo I'd also love to hear them. If it's still there, I'm thinking of staying at Shoestrings in Victoria Falls.
Reply to this There are no real problems crossing the boarder into Zim, you will get stung for a visa being a British national (I think its about $80) - this is Robert Mugabe’s hit back that the uk as he is not a fan of Tony. Also I am sure you are aware that inflation is running at about 8000 %! (MISSING)Have you considered going from Bots into Zambia then to Vic Falls (Livingstone). You can cross at the Kassangula ferry boarder accessed from Kasane in Bots. I think the falls are just as spectacular from the Zam side you get a completely different view.
Sounds like an awesome trip what ever you decide

Reply to this I should have enough dollars for that. As for Livingstone, I was there in 06. It's not really the falls that are drawing me this time, more the chance to see some of Zimbabwe. I've a friend out there at the moment, but I'm not sure he's going to be back in time to be of help.
If all else fails, I generally find that making things up as I go along works pretty well though 😊
Thanks for the info.
