young female traveling alone in brazil

I am planning to travel/backpack in Brazil at the end of December. I am a female in my mid-twenties and will be traveling alone. I am from the US but look as though I could be from Brazil. I do not know Portuguese but do know Spanish. How safe is it for a female to travel alone in Brazil and do you have any tips/suggestions? Thanks.

Hi, finally I can be some help on this forum instead of just reading it! I ´ve just left Brazil after 2 weeks there travelling alone. Its easy and lots of fun! I was totally expecting to get off the plane and be mugged at gun point... its so not like that but has such a bad reputatation with people scaremongering.

There are obviously places you should not go on your own at night, be careful about having valuables on show, the usual story. If you go to the beach, take the bare minimum in cash and no camera etc if you´re alone. Thats just common sense, if you fall asleep sunbathing and leave your camera on show next to you, its probably gonna disappear.

The best advice I can give you is to book into hostels that are good for meeting people, ie on reviews on Hostelbookers etc. Ive met so many people already, mainly other girls travelling alone who are happy to hang out for shopping, beaches etc.

I dont speak any Portuguese and hardly any Spanish. Most people there spoke some English, and the spanish helped elsewhere. I would definitely recommend you go to Salvador, I had a great time there staying in the Laranjerais hostel which is brilliant for meeting other people in the same boat as you.

Dont stress about it, you´ll have a great time and the weather here is sooooo nice compared to reports Ive had from home! Reply to this
