Hello, I'm looking at spending approx. 6 months in South America and have some questions about a world airline pass for South America.

I'm looking at traveling around South America for 6 months. I'm unsure about what cities I'll be visiting, in which, I'll be traveling by bus and possibly plane. I was curious to know if anyone knows or has had any experience with any type of an inter-continent airline pass. I'm not sure if it would be cheaper to buy one-way airline passes if needed or buy some type of pass that could possibly be cheaper in the long run. I have no set cities or timeline so I would like things to be flexible. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hey goodtimes im currently finalising my world trip and im traveling to South America so i have done a little research.... if you go to lan.com, website for LAN airlines this covers lan argentina, lan peru etc....you get the drift, if your after single flights just going from place in SA to the next country then they do an airpass and this gives you minimum of three flights and i think maybe upto 6 flights.

For three flights it convereted back to sterlings as about £220 and a normal single with lAN can be £200 on its own and so its a good offer, if you needed to change flights then you would have to pay a local admin fee, i doubt it would be much though.

Check it out, as the are no cheap no frills airlines in SA, so its the airpass or the less cheap option of sibgle flights, if you have more time then SA is service by several large bus companys that offer luxury bus travel and some journeys can be as little as $40 dollars or roughly £20.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

Hi guys,

We just did 4 months in Sth Am, as part of a round the world trip with a One-World ticket. This ticket gave us 4 flights within Sth America. It had limitations though - most of the flights were with LAN, who have their hub in Santiago, with limited flights between other destinations. Therefore to get from one place to the next we had to go back to Chile to change.

We ended up cancelling a flight from Lima to Buenos Aires to go by bus through Bolivia. Bus is THE way to go in most of South America, especially Argentina and Chile where the buses are comfortable, efficient and frequent.

That said, in the end the flights worked out much cheaper to do a round the world ticket than to fly straight over from Australia, and we had the bonus of being able to fly to and around Europe as a sweetner on the end. Be aware that flights in South America can sometimes be more expensive for foreigners than locals (eg Aerolineas Argentinas) and in Brasil there may be restrictions on purchasing tickets with airlines like GOL which force you to use a travel agent, also adding to the cost. All in all, a round the world ticket is the best way to go, but make sure you have flexibility with dates and remember that buses are great too. By travelling overland you really get to see much more.

Cheers, and have fun

Chris

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. I'll be looking into these options. I think for the most part we'll be traveling by bus, however, I just wanted to keep airlines in mind. Reply to this
