Help! Malaria tablets for South America

Hi Everyone.. Some advice needed please!
13 years ago, January 12th 2011 No: 1 Msg: #126519

I'm off to South America in just over 2 weeks and my doctor told me to trial the Larium malaria tablets, so I did, I was fine but my boyf wasn't!

But my friend went to see his doctor today and was told that Larium doesn't cover Peru.. Does anyone have any more info on this?!

Also has anyone take Larium while in South America as I read somewhere that it isn't good with altitude?!

Thanks x

G'day Hayley,
i was also given Lariam from my doctor as opposed to the 1 per day doxycycline tablets that my mates were given. i fly out to Peru in 5 days. i have trialed one and had minimal side effects. i have spoken to 2 doctors and neither have mentioned anything about Lariam not covering Peru, i have another consultation this afternoon and i will try and confirm. i have also heard that there is no threat of Malaria at high altitudes so i was not even sure whether i was going to take them for Cuzco and the inca trail.
i would like to hear anyone elses thoughts on this also.
