Hello all.

Brand new to this forum, great to be here.

I am looking to Volunteer in Africa, just 2 or 3 week career break to do some good in this world and to fill a personal void.

I've searched alot on Google, and even though I work for a Travel Marketing company I still cannot find any organisation that just lets me go out there, and work. I don't want to pay hundereds of pounds for over the top accomodation, one place said "satalite TV and Internet" in the accomodaton which i find astounding, and not in a good way. All I want is to be there, in the poorest communities and do the work that is needed, living in the same type of places the citizens are.

Can any one point me in the right direction?

Thanks very much.

(sorry for the bad spelling, I am secretly doing this at work so no time to spell check or type properly! )

Hi Mike im sure someone with Africa 'experience' - (Otherguysdime I believe volunteered in Africa) - could help you with some contacts and good on you for doing something for others and that..personal void. You could try being the wandering helper - I spent a bit of time in the south pacific islands and asia just wandering past people working and joining in. My partner and I recently helped some thai people pull down a shop move it up the road and rebuild it in one day - at first the locals looked at us like we were insane but by the end of the day everyone was laughing and having a great time. I guess they werent expecting two farangs especially a giant one covered in tattoos to start lugging timber and tin etc up the road and just walk away when the job was done. We painted a boat in Cambodia because the man doing it was very elderly and struggling in the heat. I weaved mats in Kiribati (very unsuccessfully but provided the local ladies with much amusements at my attempts) and because of the field I work in I have the skills to set up a water system with very limited materials which I did in several places in PNG. I take rice to orphanages everywhere I go but never go to orphanages with websites..id rather ask the locals and find one that isnt staffed by volunteers who are paying a price to contribute....to me, those arent the orphanages that need rice. I dont give money, but I give rice and pens, pencils etc and always spend a few hours with the kids drawing or playing.

I hope you find what your looking for.....and dont pass up the opportunity to be the mysterious stranger who turns up, helps and disappears 😊 Reply to this

That sounds amazing.

I never thought about being the passing stranger. I would certainly like to do that as part of my experience. I think I would ideally do three weeks in the heart of the community, then a week just walking by, seeing what I can learn from the culture and who I can help along the way. The world needs everyone to pull together and I want to do as much as i can.

Thanks for the inspiration, I will PM the user you mentioned, I am sure they'll give me some good tips!

Thanks a lot.
