23 yr old male travelling to South America for 3 months...

I'm a 23 year old male for Australia leaving to travel in South America for 3 months this coming November.

I'm flying into Buenos Aires and was planning to make my way up the west side of SA, starting in Argentina then moving up into Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. I have a very open travel itinerary and don't want to overplan...

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for must-sees! I realise South America is an enormous continent, so am I being too ambitious by visiting so many countries in 3 months? Did anyone find a particular country/region/city/site a standout? Very curious to hear....😊

Thanks!! Reply to this

Hey Luke, I haven't actually gone but I'm doing pretty much the same route as you (just a couple of months later) so I'd be interested to hear other people's responses too. From what I've researched so far, apart from the obvious places (Machu Picchu, Galapagos Islands) I'm keen on checking out the Mendoza Wine Valley in Argentina, the island of Chiloe and the Atacama Desert in Chile, Trujillio and the adobe city Chan Chan in Peru, the salt flats and dinosaur ruins in Bolivia and a jail in La Paz that is its own self-contained community/economy, an amazon trip in either Bolivia or Ecuador, the caribbean beaches and Tayrona national park in Colombia.

everyone keeps warning me about Colombia and how dangerous it is, but I'm good friends with somewhere who came from there and she said just as long as you follow your instincts and don't travel on overnight buses or go into the eastern part of the country you'll pretty much be out of harm's way. I don't think you're being too ambitious doing all that, it gives you about 2 weeks in each country, and you're not going to Patagonia which is where most people seem to spend a lot of time/money going to. 3 months is ambitious but hey see how you go!
must sees - patagonia in argentina and the south of chile are beautiful, with snowy mountains and glaciers..
only desert in the north of chile
buenos aires is lots of fun, stay at milhouse hostel!
in bolivia the highlights are the salt flats, la paz and the lake. you can go to the jungle too but its really far away.
in peru dont miss cusco, great little place, make sure you go to machu picchu, may as well do a trek while ur there, its fabulous! rafting in peru is fun too. lima is nice but just for a few days. make sure you stay at loki hostel in cusco and lima, its the best one!
huarez is beautiful for world-class trekking and mancora is a beautiful beach town! havent been to ecaudor or colombia but eveyone tells me colombia is the most amazing place in south america!!!!! Reply to this

Hi luke,

Im heading out there in october hoping to do Peru , ecuador, colombia, salt flats in bolivia, Iguaza falls and on to Rio in 11 weeks so il let you know how i get on, being pretty ambitious i know, but i plan to leave out the things like the trek to Machu, takes up alot of time, but rather do the climbs nd walks around machu instaed(obviously i havent done the trek but i would imagine there are more interesting jungle treks, boat trips off the trail sites etc which i would rather spend time on.

also i reccommend Couch surfing as a great way to meet locals who can give you alot better insite into areas and hidden treasures plus a real feel for the people themselves. www.couchsurfing.org

hope you have a blast im so excited about going and its really tough trying to decide what to do

Hey Luke!
In Argentina: Check La Patagonia (I didn't go myself, but I am told it is AWESOME) Then if you are into "hippie" stuff, then you might wanna check el Bolson. Check algo the 7 lakes route it is awesome (starts in San Martin de los Andes and goes to Villa la Angostura). Bariloche is beautiful in summer, if you are lucky you can still see snow on the mountains even in summer.
Then I also recommend Mendoza for awesome wine, Cordoba for its friendly people and then the North of Argentina (Salta, Cafayate, Cachi, Tilcara, Purmamarca) which has awesome views.
I didn't go to Bolivia, but travelers often go to the Uyuni Salt flats, Lake Titicaca on their way to Peru.
In Peru Machu Pichu is a must and then most people also go to La isla del sol, which I think is in Lake Titicaca.
In Ecuador, if you have the money, then go to Galapagos islands.
In Colombia I recommend Cali (salsa capital), Bogota, Villa de Leyva (in Boyaca province) Zona Cafetera (Coffee Zone), the Atlantic Coast (Cartagena for colonial architecture, Santa Marta and Parque Tayrona, San Andres & Providencia Islands). There is also a famous trail near Tayrona, Lost City trail, which many people do.

If you are in South America, I also recommend you visit Brazil, which also has A LOT of things to do. Visit not only Rio de Janerio and Sao Paulo, but check Salvador, REcife, Minais Gerais, the beaches in Litoral Norte. I didn't go to all those places myself, but I heard they are awesome.

Hey, that's awesome that you are going to spend three months in SA! I do think your itinerary sounds kind of ambitious, but I know if I were in your shoes I would want to see as much as possible. I just did three weeks in Peru and Bolivia, and I felt kind of rushed. My favorites were:

In Bolivia: Bike down the World's Deadliest Road and play with monkeys at the bottom + Salt flats
In Peru: I really recommend hiking the Inca Trail. I just did it in July with SAS Travels - it was probably the highlight of my entire trip. I had to book it five months in advance. You can arrive in Cusco, though, and book the Lares Trek on the spot. I really can't imagine just taking the train - amazing scenery and company.

Have fun!!

Northwest of Argentina with Say Hueque Tours

Hey Luke,
I've been backpacking in Argentina for almost a year now and recommend going from Buenos Aires to Patagonia or up to the Northwest area. You can't go wrong both have mind blowing landscapes. Although, i'm partial to the north because of its distinct culture. You get to see and taste a bit of what indigenous life was like. After that you can head right up into Bolivia for the Salt flats, where you can take some ridiculous pictures. I used a tour company called Say Hueque. for these trips and they helped to eliminate lost time and brought us right to the hot spots since they are spread out. I spent 5 days in the Salta region (which is enough), but still want to go back.
Have fun!

I think 3 months is a perfect time to Travel in South America. Things you shouldn´t miss are; The Iguazu falls in Argentina, Patagonia, the Uyuni Salt Lake in Bolivia, Titicaca Lake in Peru and Bolivia, Machu Picchu in Cusco. If you have time I really recommend you to visit Ecuador as well.
Enjoy your travels!
