Is transportation really this high in South Africa.
Hello all this is my first post here iam so glad i found this site. My wife and i are traveling to South Africa in October. Things are going well on the planning of this trip except for one thing. I will be hunting around pongola for a few days and we are having trouble with the transport to the lodge from Johannesburg.
We were given a price of 1000 dollars to pick us up at airport then return us at the end of our stay. Can anyone help me here that seems an outrageous amount to me.

I am based in Cape Town. For the $1000 I will consider to drive myself to Jhb, take you to Pongola (and back) and return to Cape Town. I think their price is a little high. But Pongola is not quite on any of the major routes and there are not many other options.
I have some conflicting thoughts on this.
First, yes the $1000 seems high, but as a fraction of what you are paying for the hunt, it may not be such a big additional expense.
Second I would suggest you rent a car and go for it by yourself. Driving here is no big deal, the roads are generally good and you will be able to see more of our beautiful country at your own time. Unfortunately we do not have much of a public transport system.

Simple point to illustrate. In Johannesburg, if you need a taxi return from airport to Standton, it's around 100usd...for 47 usd, you can rent a compact car for 24 hours. Ok....you may not want to go in many places with a Chicco, but it give you the image.
Rent a car, simple! Just make sure you take the full insurance package on it.
