I'm travelling to Sth Africa for the 2010 World Cup. Was planning on staying in hostels and bussing between cities to follow my team (Australia) around the country and take in some sights along the way.

What type of transport is available between cities and what reliability and costs are involved?

For example, how much does it cost to travel from Port Elizabeth to Durban by bus and how long will it take and are all companies reliable?

Any bus trips you may have taken may help, as the fixture will not be out until December, but I have to start budgeting and planning etc.

I guess it would be an idea to wait until you know where your team will be playing?

Regarding bussing: I checked the timetables of 2 companies. One do PE-DBN in 15hours. The other do PE-DBN via Johannesburg and take longer. Yes, there are reliable operators. Check Bazbus, Intercape, Translux, and Cityliner. Sorry I cannot give links here, but they are on Google. Their Prices/timetables are on their websites. Baz also list some hostels along the way.

I can't really offer much help with buses but I just thought I'd let you know that all the games aren't ALL being played in South Africa. I was in Maputo, Mozambique in late August and a new stadium is being built for some of the lower-profile games to be played - I heard rumours that a few Southern Africa countries are taking on some of the lower draws as well. Not sure whether or not this is going to affect the Australian draw but it might.

Obviously, you may need to purchase visas and stuff if this were to be the case so I'd keep that in mind for your budget. Also, the cost varies greatly between the cities - I believe that Johannesburg (where I stayed) can be about twice as expensive as the rest of the country but I'll let a local or someone who's travelled South Africa more extensively confirm that.

EDIT: I did a quick google to try and confirm that for you and it looks as though the stadium may not be complete in time; but still a minor detail that you might wanna keep in mind. Sorry for the scare!

Now I'm so annoyed that I never took a photo of that stadium! It was eerie to see such a big piece of construction taking place side by side with so much poverty.
