I have never travelled much before, and have recently decided to go to South America in Jan. I am thinking of taking about 9 to 12 weeks of school to learn spanish. My plan is to do 3 weeks in Columbia, 4 weeks in Argentina and depending on my level of spanish, 2 or 3 more weeks of school in Chile. Any advice on this (good schools)? Also, after learning spanish, I dont know where my travels will take me. Do I need a return ticket or can I just wing it? I know in australia for example, I would need to have a return ticket. This whole travelling thing is new/scary and if anyone has any tips, I would greatly appreciate it!

Officially you would need to have an exit ticket to enter many countries, but they dont seem to check often/ever.
South America on a Shoestring by Lonely Planet might be a useful purchase for you. It gives all kinds of helpful information for the independent traveller.
