Need information on what to do about cellular phone services while we are in S.A. for 4-months

Id like to get some information about the best way(s) to go with regard to cellular phone(s) and services. We use T-mobile and a customer agent mentioned that we could get a SIM unlock code, then buy a SIM card when we get to Ecuador and use that in our cell phone. But, I don want something with a monthly charge, as well be travelling around. I want a pay as you go deal, a phone and I think just getting phone cards. Wondering about places to get phones, and recommended phone services in Ecuador. Well be starting out in Quito, so Im thinking we can find what we need there. What do folks recommend? Reply to this

Phones/sim cards can be got very cheaply out there if you just wanted something to use for the duration of your stay to call within Ecuador. Main service providers are Movistar and Porta in Ecuador and you can top up pretty much anywhere. If you want them to call home you'll be better off just using internet/phone cafes - there are loads in all the main towns and calls are very cheap to the USA and Europe. Reply to this
