We start our 2months trip on 6th of december and we are going to visit brazil, argentina, chile and peru...
We have a 4500euro budget and we are aiming to visit mainly the capitals of those countries and some of the other cities.. we start our trip from greece so the cost of the airtickets seems to be our main problem. we ve decided to travel from one country to another by plane so that we can save some time... i dont know if this is a good idea as the price of the tickets is high but is an easy and safe way.. we are also planning to visit punta arenas but we havent find any good information.. we always book hostels through the hostelworld and we have gound some good offers for almost every city... another main problem we have is about the visas that we have to take and because we are europeans we dont know exactly what we can do about this...
any knid of help is welcome...

ps: if any young fellow would like to join us in our trip he or she would be more than welcome...
we are 3 university students with some experience in traveling mainly around europe...
if somebody want please contact me on for some details...
thank you...

Welcome to TravelBlog Panagiotis 😊

As Europeans, I dont think you will have any visa trouble in S. America. I dont think I ever had to get a visa in advance for any S. American or C. American country. Whatever I got was at the borders or airports, and free of charge. I have an Irish passport.

To find people to join you, you could put a separate post in the Looking for Travel Companions Forum, if you want.

I am sure you are going to have an excellent trip. About flying, sometimes you need to because of time constraints and sometimes bus works just as well. You mention Punta Arenas. Is that as a stopover to visit Torres del Paine? If so you do need to fly between Santiago and Punta Arenas. It is not practical by bus (40+ hrs). From there you bus to Puerto Natales and then TdP. But if you are going between Santiago and Mendoza in Argentina (about 6 hours) then bus is the best as the scenery through the Andes is spectacular.
Have you looked into the LAN airpass? It would probably lower your costs a lot. You have to plan your itinerary and not be so flexible, but part of your trip is going to be high season in all the countries you mention and flights scarce, so you would have to do that anyway.

You have to do it before you come.
With European Union passports, you don't need visas for anywhere you mention. Reply to this

Hi there

I'm going on a 7 week trip to South America from mid Dec 09 to end of Jan 10. I'd be interested in joining you guys for the trip (or part of it). Check out my post for some details (http://www.travelblog.org/Forum/Threads/20468-1.html).

Let me know if this matches up (roughly) with what you guys plan to do. Otherwise I'd be travelling on my own, and it's more fun with other :0)

Cheers

There is a penguin colony outside Punta Arenas called Seno Otway which is easy to get to and another colony on Magdalena Island. This is much bigger but it is more expensive to get to as it involves a boat and takes a good part of a day. A lot of people just pass through Punta Arenas quickly, but you could easily spend two days there if you do some side trips. Puerto Natales is very small and is really just an overnight stop for Torres del Paine.
How nice that you will see your friends again! It makes it a better experience if you have someone local to show you around.
Getting to Cape Horn is not easy and is expensive. If you are also going into Argentine Patagonia, you could go to Ushuaia, which is about as far south as most people go.
Dan, you will soon pick up people to travel with on your trip. Especially at that time of year. Reply to this

Hey,
I'm heading over to Brazil Jan 15 and travelling down to Uruguay, Argentina, back up Chile, Boliva, Peru area for about 2 months before going to Central America. I'm doing it by land, although I may fly from Buenos Aries down to Pataonia to also save some time. Also looking to do Carnival in Rio in Feb, but seems fairly expensive unless there's a group that rents an apartment. If you're interested in hooking up for part of the trip, let me know.
Cheers,

I´m currently on a year long stint in SA.

My only advice would be not to spread yourself too thinly. Unfortunately you´ve already said you want to see the Capitals etc.

I enjoy myself far more when I don´t have serious time pressure. For me, it´s so important to have some flexablity and if you meet people who your having a great time with, maybe you can stay for longer or go in the same direction or whatever. Also, better to really get to know a place. If you make your trip about ticking boxes, that could be all you end up doing!

I loved Buenos Aires but only after living there for a while. Bariloche, Mendoza and Salta are all great in Argentina. You could easily busy yourself for 2 months in Arg alone. Obviously Brazil´s huge and one of the reasons I´m not going is cos I wouldn´t know where to start, but the Northeast sounds the most interesting part to me.

Cusco is very cool but touristy. A trek there is a must! I´d recommend the Salkantay as I did in another thread. You should also see lake titicaca, although the Bolivian side is better. There are other interesting places in Peru but I´m not going to go into it because there are better places to go.

I notice you didn´t mention Bolivia, which was a real highlight for me. It´s got better food than a lot of SA, it´s got a traditional culture, less tourists than Peru, and far more little gems packed into a small Country IMO.

So I´d say sack off 2 of your Countries and do the other 2 more comprehensively. Actually a great journey would be to start in Santiago and corss the Andes to Mendoza (which is spectacular), then head to Bariloche and further into patagonia if you like, then you could head North to Salta. The journey from Salta to the Bolivian border is gorgeous. There´s loads to do in Bolivia, which I´ve mentioned elsewhere. I´d do the Salt flats, Sucre, Rurre and Titicaca if you have time. Then you could cross into Peru and head to Cusco. I think that would pretty much fill your time and would be a great trip. I´ve realised I missed out BA. Maybe you could start in BA, although as a place that takes a littel while to really appreciate, you might then be pushed for time.

I´m probably not much help cos you´ve probably decided already what you want to do, but maybe just give it some thought.

Oh and by the way, Iguazu didn´t wow me like other things I´ve seen in SA. I´d happily do my whole trip all over again, but next time I wouldn´t bother with Iguazu. Reply to this

Hello!!

Well after all the travelling to busy cities why not visit us in Santa Rosa de Calamuchita? Kick you shoes off, enjoy a home cooked meal and swim in the rivers....then cruise on to the next busy city :-)

Any other info needed for Argentina..shout and I will help where I can.

Happy travelling!
