How do you complete it?

Hi there,

I have been reading about the Quilotoa Loop in my guidebook and it sounds good. The guidebook says there is no public transport available for the full loop. Does anyone know if the route is well marked if you had to hike it back, or is there some transport the guidebook does not know about? We're leaving from Latcunga.

Many thanks,

Hey Mackin,

I took a direct bus 2 years ago from Latacunga to Chugchilan (via Zumbahua) which took about 4 hours, a great bus trip - be sure to get to the bus station early to buy your ticket, the bus was completely full out of Latacunga, and try to sit in the front of the bus due to the bumps and it can get pretty dusty on the dirt road sections, there are some great places to stay in Chugchilan and the hike to Lake Quilitoa is fantastic, I hiked with 4 other individuals and we paid $15.00 for a young man to be our guide for the day. Getting back to Latacunga from Chugchilan was one of my most memorable experiences I have ever had while traveling through Ecuador. I got up at 2:30am, walked in the dark to the towns public square with the most amazing stars shining above me and waited for the bus driver to wake up and get the bus cranked and ready to leave Chugchilan for Latacunga at 3am. At one incredible point of this trip, as the sun was rising and the bus came over a hill - the ecuadorians told me to Look, and behold I saw the Avenida de Volcanoes in their full splendor - It was the most beutiful scenery I have ever witnessed. Other folks either hired a taxi, tryck or got a ride on the "milk truck" later in the morning, to get back to where ever they were going. It is abit early, but I would recommend the early bus if you want a unique experience!
From Latacunga - I hopped on a bus to Quito and was at the main terminal around 12noon!
Enjoy

Hi Tim,

That sounds brilliant! Thanks very much for letting me know. As I say, it sounded good in the guidebook but not very clear if the whole loop was possible but now that I read that it is it's definitely on the to-do list! Plus we just booked our flights to Quito last night!!!

Thanks again,
