The week before Carnaval in Salvador, there will be a lot of construction going on in the streets, viewing stands and camarotes, etc. being built, and the foreign tourists start filling up the city and its beaches, changing the ambience. Do your in-town sightseeing and shopping while you have the time. Try to go to the beaches on Itaparica and maybe in Praia do Forte while you can, without crowds and lines, as well. A good site for overview info about Salvador is www.bahia-online.net, which describes neighborhoods, beaches, history and sights, among other things. Since Carnaval in Salvador is about the music, the site is a good start to familiarize yourself with the bands and singers on the trios electricos so you can decide which abada(s) you may want to buy. This puts you in a roped-off area between a band's two trucks that is out of the fray of the 'pipoca' crowds and gives you access to some services (food, drink, toilet). You can also look on YouTube to hear some of the bands. If you're going to be following a trio electrico for 7 or so hours, it should be music you like. The city is pretty crazy during Carnaval, and the streets get pretty dirty. With the hordes tourists come opportunistic folks as well, so be vigilant and don't carry/show valuables. A lot of folks go to Morro do Sao Paulo for the Ressaca (hangover) parties after Carnaval, but I don't think you'll have problems flying out of the country.

Hey Katzy,

My friend and I (Aussie and Kiwi chicks) are also hitting Carnaval in Salvador in 2010. We are still trying to find accommodation as well. Could you please let us know who you booked yr apartment with. Everything is so expensive. Looking forward to it though... should be wicked.

Cheers

hey guys, i booked it through this company

http://www.vrconnection.com/

the one we booked sleeps 11 and worked out being about $35-$40 a night each, which is pretty good considering hostel beds are going for $100-$200 a night and we have our own private place, they have been really easy and good to deal with..

let us know if you need any more help

cheers
