Johannesburg lodging suggestions - June 2010

If anyone has any suggestions on reasonably-priced, safe lodging for two 20-something females to stay for two weeks in Johannesburg during the 2010 World Cup, we would be very appreciative of the help.

My sister and I will be traveling to South Africa during the summer of 2010 to attend the World Cup. The ticketing process, and thus our planning, has just started.

We're planning to stay approximately two weeks, starting at the beginning of the tournament in mid-June. We'll go to all of the soccer matches that we can get tickets for, and plan on filling in the other days with more traditional tourist activities. (Let me know if you have any suggestions!)

We have entered the ticket lottery for the games in/around Johannesburg, so that it where we plan to stay. If anyone has any suggestions on reasonably-priced, safe lodging for two 20-something females to stay for these two weeks, we would be very appreciative of the help.

Here is the information on the stadiums we'll likely be seeing the majority of games at (though we may try to get to Rustenburg, Nelspruit or Polokwane for a match or two):

Soccer City
Nasrec Road, Nasrec, Johannesburg,
Capacity: 94,700. An existing stadium being upgraded from a capacity of 90,000.

Ellis Park
Staib St, Doornfontein, Johannesburg
(From the M1, take exit 13B Johannesburg (''M31 Harrow road''), follow this to Currey St where you turn right. The stadium will be in front of you)
Capacity: 60,000. An existing stadium being upgraded from a capacity of 55,000. Ellis Park is the cultural home of South African Rugby.

Loftus Versfeld Stadium
Kirkness st, Pretoria (From the N1, take exit 141 Pretoria (''M6 Lynnwood road'') towards Pretoria city center. Follow Lynnwood until Kirkness St where you turn right. The stadium is on your right).
Capacity: 50,000 Reply to this

Alyson,

Go to www.southafrica.net for a list of accommodation establishments. It's the official South Africa Tourism website.

Regarding the soccer - FIFA has blocked space in most of the hotels for their sponsors, etc. You guys might be better off with a guesthouse / B&B.

Regards

As you are going to live there for two weeks, so staying in youth hostels would be most economic. www.hostels.com/za.jo.html and www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/south-africa/johannesburg etc may give you many options to select according to your budget and convenience. However, if you are in mood to live with ultimate luxury, you may check in also.

Hi all

I am a member of an organisation that represent various lodgings, totaling more than 700 beds, all graded at least 3 stars, around Cape Town.

Some of us are contracted to FIFA and some not. We still have many beds available for the 2010 Word Cup period at an average price below $100.

Anybody interested to see the 8 matches in Cape Town?

Allison,

You haven't updated the OP so are you still looking for ldoging? Also what (if any) tickets were you allocated.
You need to know where your games will be prior to making lodging arrangements.
Plenty of websites, depends on your comfort level of ladging. Also, how do you plan on getting around SA?
Feel free to PM me, as I've been working on this for a year and am well versed on the ins and outs of planning a trip to SA for the WC.
Cheers and good luck! Reply to this

Hi Allison
Backpacking accommodation that could be of help to you. They will also have info on how to get to the grounds etc.
Nelspruit - www.funkymonkeys.co.za , www.krugerandmore.co.za
Rustenburg - www.hodgepodgebackpackers.co.za,
Pretoria - www.chillilodge.co.za ,www.1322backpackers.com
Johannesburg - www.sowetobackpackers.com,www.backpackers-ritz.com;www.geminibackpackers.co.za
The hostels have travel tips, ideas, tours etc. that they sell. I definitely recommend a Soweto Township tour, The Apartheidsmuseum ( amazing), Voortrekkermonument, Trip to Cradle of Mankind. All amazing places with lots of info.

Thank you, everyone, for all of your help.

We have recently booked a guest house in Hyde Park. Next up: arranging additional adventures, outside of the 7 games that we are seeing (all in Johannesburg/Pretoria/Rustenburg).

Thanks again, everyone! Reply to this
