looking for travel advise for a Tanzania trip
18 years ago, January 30th 2006 No: 1 Msg: #3894
I have not been to Africa yet but I am planning my first trip in July, to Tanzania. I have a weekly travel podcast (like an internet radio show) called the Amateur Traveler. I had a chance to interview someone on yesterday's show about his trip to Tanzania on a safari and it just makes me more excited.

I have started to learn Swahili. What other advise would people have for me? Reply to this

Hey Chris: Just a word of wit. There's one tour company which arranged our trip (Family of 25!) twice - in 2002 and again last December 2005 and it might be the best. Try Rahelian Africa Limited www.rahelianafrica.com / info@rahelianafrica.com. Very explicit in its arrangements and has the best, most courteous personnel. Regards, Colin Cavill and Family. Los Angeles, California, USA.

If I where you, I'd choose a random small village from the map, take a bus there and stay there for a few days. You'll probably end up with meetings to remember for a lifetime and maybe an interesting interview, too, for your podcast!

safe trip! /Peder – http://www.hejhopp.com Reply to this

Chris,

My advice is like CHEETAH's. Get away from the main tourist drags. Jump on a matatu and just head in a direction you think will be cool. Talk to everyone on buses and the street and just find out as quickly as possible how warm and friendly people are in East Africa. You are going to have such a good time there and probably end up in so truly ridiculous situations. If you love different cultures and nature then you will be in heaven.
I'm heading back to Africa in May and I cannot wait. I'm itching to get back as miss the place from last time I was there 18 months ago. So long the dull drudgery of 9-5 in the UK. In your face, the system.

Good luck,

Haven't yet been to East Africa, but I'd go with what Cheetah and CA say.
I'm doing almost exactly what Cheetah recommends. The random village really is miles from anywhere or anything that you'll find in the LP.
You don't really find out till you get there and do it I reckon.
Seems to me, the best the Lonely Planet can recommend are the most touristed things - I'm sure they're fun for a day or two but it won't be Africa. B Reply to this

Chris,

I just got back and had an amazing time. I have some suggestions, but, before I give them, I would like to know what you like to do. I have a contact for climbing Killy. I had an amazing personal guide. He can arrange whatever you like. And I had a great experience in Zanzibar as well.

Some other things to keep in mind...

Take US$ in Cash. Travellers cheques, visa and often bank cards are completely useless.
Do not forget to get your shots. Consult with a travel doctor. It is worth the money.
If you have never travelled a third world country, be prepared mentally. Tanzania is not as poverty stricken as some countries, but it is a good dose of reality. More importantly, things do not always go "as planned". Be prepared to "roll with it" should the need arise.

Hi Chris,

Well, you should not miss out Tanzania. I did a fabulous safari last February with Lucky tours & safaris based in Arusha, Tanzania. All was perfect and I really had a good time ( really hope to be there again!!). You can get intouch with them on info@luckytourssafaris.com I belive they will give you the perfect program for your holiday. Their rates are also worth the service they offer.

Hi Chris,

I went to Tanzania last March, it was awesome, specially my outfitter www.zaratravel.com. If you need some suggestions take a look at their website, they have a lot information on health, visas, packing lists, weather, etc., or you may contact them and they will answer quickly all your questions. They are the best with reasonable prices, their service is outstanding! Reply to this

Hey Chris,

I agree Zara was great. I went on a trek up Kilimanjaro with them and it was great! The guide I had was really great, he helped me out a lot, especially at the top when I didn't think I could take another step! I also did a 5 day safari with them, and that was also amazing. I especially liked the Crater, check it out! Reply to this
