Question about dress code in DR Congo
15 years ago, September 22nd 2008 No: 1 Msg: #49498
I'm going to DR Congo at the end of October for 2 weeks and was wondering if anyone knows what the dress code is for women there, or of any website where I could find out? Thanks! Reply to this

Hello Rachael 😊

Here is a news link with a couple of photos of women in the DR Congo. I would cover up as much as the ones in the photos if I was going there. It seems a bit like what women were wearing in Kenya and Uganda when I was there. News link

I read some horrendous reports about vicious rape and violence against women happening with such regularity in DR Congo that I wonder if it is even safe for foreign women.

We've been assured we'll be fine cos we're going out to work with local organisations out there who our charity supports & so we will always have some of their staff with us.

Thanks for the link to those photos - we're getting a briefing on it at some point but I just want to get started on gathering clothes up to go. The general feeling amongst our group is that as long as shoulders and knees are covered you're probably OK... and take a headscarf! Reply to this

The headscarf is probably not necessary. DR Congo isnt a Muslim country is it? Reply to this

No, but apparently (reading from someone who has been there before) it can be useful in getting rid of unwanted attention from men...

Just looking up wikigender and it says there are no reported restrictions on dress for women in DRC... so what I was planning on taking should be fine 😊 Reply to this
