Patagonia itinerary

Hi,

I\'ll be going to Argentina and Chile with my wife in December, staying a part of our juorney in Patagonia. Our time is limited, as we would like to see other parts of Argentina/Chile too. So we\'ll be staying in Pragonia six days, I already booked flight to Rio Gallegos and back to BA. I\'m thinking of doing a round trip (with rent-a-car) Rio Gallegos - El Calafate - Puerto Natales - Punta Arenas - Rio Gallegos, the other possibility is Rio Gallegos - El Calafate - El Chalten - Puerto Natales - Rio Gallegos i.e. El Chalten instead of Punta Arenas, going from Puerto Natales back to Argentina and directly to Rio Gallegos. I can\'t decide (I like to photograph very much, so the scenery is important to me), can you help me ?

Thanks in advance.

I think combining Puerto Natales & El Chalten is too much for 6 days as you need at least 3/4 days in each of them, and these are places you don't want to rush. I would spend a day (or maybe half a day only) in El Calafate for the Perito Moreno glacier, then try and move on to one of the other two. Very difficult to choose between El Chalten and Torres del Paine, it might be more hassle crossing a border with a rent a car so perhaps El Chalten is the easiest option.

Keep in mind that distances in Argentina are lloooong!. I agree with Barrygahan. If I were you I would choose El Chalten. Also make sure to measure time and distance from one destination to another. From Rio Gallegos to El Calafate can take about 5 hours, depending on the climate. You will get to amazing landscapes at Rio Gallegos and El Calafate!...
Let us know if we can help you with more!😊

Hi, thanks for help, I do have one more question : beside Patagonia I intend to make a journey in southwest Argentina and Chile (december/january), coming to Chile from Salta, probably from San Antonio de los Cobres over Paso de Sico to San Pedro de Atacama, or the alternative route over Paso de Jama (from Jujuy and Susques) to San Pedro. As I heard the first road is mostly gravel (on the Argentinian side too, according to Ruta0 Buscador de Rutas), and the second one is better and more common. Which road from both mountain passes to San Pedro is better? taking into account that I like to photograph very much and the beauty of landscape is very important to me. Do I need a 4WD ?
Thanks in advance. Reply to this
