Advice on trip to Iguassu
15 years ago, August 19th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #45931
Can anyone provide advice on the best way to visit Iguassu falls from Rio de Janerio? Which airlines fly there and is it best to travel there independantly or with a tour group?

Many thanks

Hi Rob,
i think this really depends on your personal preference as far as the tour/independent is concerned. i don't think that at the falls themselves you would really need a tour. I saw them from the Argentina side though, and really, it took me a day max to see everything. The park was not huge or confusing or anything. I flew TAM when i was in Brazil - it was ok, but they were very much like commuter planes (stopped several times during almost every route). Reply to this

Hi Rob,

You don't need to book any tour to get you to Iguazu Falls from Rio.
Certainly TAM will take you there, but if you have the time, do it overland and visit other places along the way, to maximize your travel experience (i.e. Buzios, Florianopolis, etc)

Please check..

Or more specifically...

Happy travels,

Daniel

Great many thanks for the advice and information. I may travel overland there and fly back as I have limited time.

Hi,

Make sure you see both sides...quite easy to go across to Argentina. Can confirm that it will be easier on your own, just fly TAM. If you can, do the helicopter ride...did it in Feb 08...was 80 usd...I think it's a great way to see them.

Was in June in Niagara, and 10 days ago in Victoria Falls....Iguaca is by far the best!

Have fun!

Peter, you rank Iguaca better than Victoria? I am only asking because I'm traveling to Africa in the spring and was considering trying to get to Victoria falls. I have limited time though so was not 100% sure, especially with the political/safety concerns there right now? Reply to this

I was in Victoria 10 days ago...The park on the Zimbabwe side close at 6pm...but at 6pm...if you are at the end of the park, which is 10 minutes walk from the entrance, you can have one of the most amazing sunset ever...it's right in the crack! Impressive.

Iguacu is more impressive as it is a much bigger scale and you can basically nearly be under the Falls from the Brazilian site.

For Victoria Falls, the crack is so narrow....that nobody can go down there...

You can read my little entry on my blog, few more details. The Zambezi rafting is more than fun and amazing.

Falls are 3/4 on the Zimbabwe side, and if you can stay at the Victoria Falls, it's a great place. Just be ready to undersntad that they don't have a huge choice of food...that's say, we speak proper 5 stars standard!

I did came from Zambia, so did see the Zambian side also...would still stay on the Zim side for me. And the good news if you go to Zimbabwe...and spend money...you end up feeding a LOT of people...which due to the situation, is not that bad! Where do you fly from? If you fly from JNB...fly around lunch...90 minutes flight...check-in to your hotel, and go straigth to the Falls on the Zimbabwe side from 4pm to 6.30pm...not important if you leave the park after they close....next early morning, rafting on Zambezi...and next morning. fly out of the falls, it's a two nights...but great two nights. If you decide to go to the Victoria Falls hotel, let me know, can give oyu some good contacts there...had a very very lovely suite.

Have fun!

Oh, forget...small note...but not nice one...US citizens gets hit 135usd for a visa for Zambia...while most other citizens it's 50usd for a single entry...it's just a reciprocate of the charges of US to get a visa for entering US. Reply to this

Thanks Peter. I think that's as it should be, why pay our gov't a lot of money to visit and give us the free run of their country :-) Brazil does the same for their visas - they pretty much only require a visa because we require one of their citizens visiting the US and I can totally understand that.
