Opinions please. Arriv in Quito and plan to see Esmeraldas, Canoa, Guayaquil, Banos, and more.
Has anybody bussed it to Peru and/or Columbia? My friend says it maybe risky to bus into Cali. I'm willing to try.
Reply to this Don't think there are any risks bussing to Cali, especially if you travel by day.
I recommend Vilcabamba in southern Ecuador, one of the nicest places in the country. Mindo and Otavalo are also well worth seeing.
Reply to this I agree with Barry....Mindo and Otavalo are a must. Baños is nice too.....touristy but nice. I also liked Riobamba and Alausi. Cuenca is a nice city if you like cities but I found it rather boring there. The Quilotoa Loop is nice if you have the time... A trip to Papallacta (thermal baths) is highly recommended.....the nicest hot springs i have seen so far in South America. Continuing east from there is nice too....to the jungle..... Be very careful in the Esmeraldas.....quite dangerous there. And Quito as well as Guayaquil are quite dangerous...just use your common sense and you will be fine. Never put your bag on the floor in buses.... 😉 For the coast.....i would recommend Puerto Lopez....much smaller and less touristy than Montañita which is nice (unless you like that sort of thing).
I have bussed to Peru and all went smoothly (just cross at the border that is NOT on the coast.....coast crossings tend to be sketchy). I will be bussing to Columbia in 1 week....can update then to let you know how it went. 😊 Have fun in Ecuador....it is a beautiful country!!
Reply to this Thank you Kathy . . . couldn't have asked for better feedback. Enjoy Colombia and do let us know how it goes.
Reply to this I´ve literally just arrived back in Ecuador from Colombia and had no problems bussing it at all - just travel during the day. The only thing I found slightly annoying is that buses in Colombia tend to leave when full as opposed to the departure time, this can add quite a lot onto your travel time! Bussing to Peru is also very straightforward and easy to do. Within Ecuador Canoa is lovely as are the northern beaches in Esmeraldas (and they tend to get more sun). I would definitely reccomend Quilotoa loop, it really doesn't take up that much time.
Reply to this Yes, your experiences make me feel more secure now. Negativite rumoring about foreign countries can be exaggerated; we fear the unknown. Before Cambodia, the Cambodian American Do-nut shop proprietor in Coalinga CA told us, "they'll eat you up--they hate Americans . . . be careful in Phnom Penh . . . " We left somewhat overly uncertain, but upon completion of 2 months in Siem Reap, PP, and Sihanoukeville, we came back to CA reaffirmed that kind and loving comportment is routinely reciprocated now matter where or when.
I have to google Quilotoa loop in order to appreciate your drift.
