I have time off May 31-June 12. Where to go, Colombia or Peru
15 years ago, May 20th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #35832
I was able to snag some time off before my new job started. I originally wanted to go to Peru, but looks like the Inca Trail is booked solid until September. I am a huge hiker so REALLY want to hike the trail and will be bummed if i don't get to. Any info on being able to get a permit to hike before we go or am I completely SOL?

Alternatively, we were really considering Colombia. Is it safe for 2 females (we speak fluent Spanish)? Where should we go?

Any tips would be great!

Hi Casey,
Have you considered one of the "alternative" trails to Machu Picchu instead of the Inca Trail? We recently hiked the Salkantay Trail which was great fun and much easier to get onto than the Inca Trail. We just turned up in Cusco and sorted it within a day or two. Very cheap too at $180 per person for 5 days including meals, accommodation (4 nights camping, 1 night hotel), transport and entry to Machu Picchu.
We also hiked to the Inca ruins at Choquequirao which you would love if you are a hiker.
More info can be found on my blogs!

I imagine that your interests are in archeological or cultural travel. If that is the fact, i recommend you to go to Santa Marta and try to go to Ciudad Perdida located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Santa Marta is a city located in the basis of the Sierra with an amazing beaches in Parque Tayrona (National park) and the highest peaks in Colombia (about 5.000 meters above sea) I will try to find some guys that make this trails and send them to you. Near Santa marta you can go to la Guajira that is the northern part of the country, where you can find the Salinas and El Cabo de la Vela and the Rancherias. Amazing.
Other place is San Gil or Barchara in Santander where you can do parapente, rafting, caves, bikes, etc. and the tows that are from the colonial period are so beautiful.
You can also go to west part of the country that is the Pacific zone. This is a very special place because is a rainforest and one of the richest places of the world in biodiversity. The season of the whales starts in july 20 (more or less) till first days of October. Reply to this
