Three girls (that have backpacked three months through SE Asia before) are looking to plan a serious budget to spend several months in South America.
I am currently planning a trip with two other american girls through South America (Start with carnival in february and then move onto argentina chili and peru and who knows where else...)
We have no idea how to plan our budget because we have little to no connections of budget travelers that have gone through south america.
If anyone can give me a rough estimate of how much money we should be spending each month if we are planning on staying in hostel/guesthouses - eating regularly - partying a lil bit - and moving every 4 or so days?!
Any suggestions would be amazing! We have 9 months to save money and plan !!

Reply to this It really depends where you go. For example, in Brazil you will probably spend far more than in Argentina. We've been travelling in South America now for 8 months and this is average what we spent in each country per day (prices are for two people):
Argentina: 50-60 USD
Chile: 70-80 USD
Uruguay: 60-70 USD
Paraguay: 30-40 USD
Bolivia: 30-40 USD
Peru: 60-70 USD
Ecuador: 50 USD
We're not complete shoestring travellers, but we're spending carefully all the same. We normally stay in double rooms, eat in cheapish restaurants (or cook in hostels), and do the usual, popular sites.
Reply to this It is possible to travel on very little. Average hostels in Ecuador were only $5 per person and were perfectly reasonable. It really depends on what you want to do. Some trips such as the Salt Flats in Bolivia and Machu Picchu will obviously raise your budget for those days by quite a lot but it's generally very easy to get by on very little for food/hostels in Ecuador and Bolivia at least. Peru is more touristy and therefore slightly more expensive.
