i am planning to go to peru in Ocotber for around a month, and i need some advice from experienced travellers about how I can get about on my own? How easy is it to get buses? trains? getting from lima to macchu picchu etc?? How much dd people get their flights from london? And do yo have to book the machu pichu in advance? I am hesitate to book a whole tour trip with gap adventures, is it possible to do it solo?

Reply to this Buses are generally very easy to get and reasonably cheap in Peru so no worries about getting about. It is possible to fly from place like Lima to Cusco if you want to cut out long-haul buses. As for Machu Picchu you go from Cusco and it depends whether you just want to visit the site or do the full Inca trail. I'd look into companies if you wanted to do the trail but if you just wanted to visit then you just have to get train tickets from the station at Cusco and buy entrance tickets once you get to Aguas Caliente.
Reply to this I'd advise you to do the trip solo rather than booking with a tour company. We've spent the last 6 weeks travelling in Peru, and have orgnaised all travel, hotels, tours, etc ourselves. You'll save buckets of money and it's not too difficult to organise.
If you want to hike the Inca Trail in October you'll need to book very soon. You could instead hike the Salkantay or Lares Trek, and leave the booking until you get to Cusco (and get a much better price too). If you're into hiking, I'd also recommend the Choquequirao trek near Cusco.
If you are taking overnight buses it's worth going with one of the big companies like Movil, Linea or Cruz del Sur. These are more expensive but also more secure.
Reply to this Many thanks for your replies kat and barry,
any recommendations who I could book teh inca trail with?
nat
Reply to this We booked the Salkantay trail for 180 USD with Hiking Peru (www.hikingperu.com) and the Choquequirao trek for the same price with Cusquena Expeditions. These prices are far less than the big agencies like SAS or Llama Path charge, and I would recommned both companies. However, you may not get this good a price by booking in advance.
