View from hostel Tuesday 1st March - Thursday 10th March
Well welcome to the travel blog of Chris and Keri!
Not really sure how to set this off officially so I'll just crack on.
After a peaceful night flight, a few average Air France meals and equally average films we arrived in Rio De Janiero !! It didn't take long to change out of our winter clothes and into our flip flops and shorts. A balmy 24C.
First stop was a bus ride to a coastal town north of Rio called Buzios. Our eyes wide open and ready to take it all in. Within minutes of arriving we'd dumped our bags in our seaside hostel and took to the streets to suck up the sunshine and start enjoying the local caipirinhas. Nice! Happy Tuesday!
Our very wintered British skin didn't take to well to the sun, we felt slightly out of place against the Brazilian types with their lovely olive skin.. damn them! 😉.. yeah, particulary when they caught us creaming up ... whilst it was raining!
In true backpacker style we hit up the nearest supermarket for the famous pasta and sauce to cook up for dinner on
the first night. (The budget went on beer and caprihinias basically... and Mossy is eagle eyeing the budget as expected.. you should see the spreadsheet model he's 'running')
The first days were spent kicking around the beaches and soaking in the reality of the adventure that's just beginning, before jumping on another bus Rio bound for the famous Ipanema beach... and the spectacular Rio Carnaval!
We arrived Thursday 3rd March afternoon, and were pleased with our ability to negotiate the Portugese language and make it to the hostel safely. Great private room, with a balcony and hammock as promised.. very smug!
Before long we'd met some really friendly English, Aussie and American folks from our hostel and through the grapevine of their connections, and had some good times together.
This included 'bloco' block parties in the streets (and a cheeky midnight dip in the waves) until sunrise with hundreds of people dancing to the samba beats in fancy dress, with beer available at every palm tree and road sign (basically everywhere). We also went to the Sambadrome to see the carnaval parade (you may have caught a bit of it on tv, with all the floats?)
Buzios
First caipirinha! Truly amazing.. we loved it, and took 2 gb of photos!!
Aside from all the partying we also managed to get out and see the sights.
A cable car ride up the Sugar Loaf (big mountain with great views over Rio), Christ the Redeemer (big statue - but a common rain cloud decided to blanket us as we arrived at the top, so you might find some humour in some of the photos we post), we also did an organised tour of a few Favellas which was really interesting (thanks Elena - we used your lady and she was great).
Well I've basically recapped all of our Rio stay - which continued until Thursday this week (10th). Time to find some more sun.....and an ice cold caipirinha!
Feel free to leave us comments, would be great to hear from you all.
xx Keri & Chris.
