Miguel and I in Maracaibo Maracaibo
The city of differences: old and new, beach and city, ocean and lake, industry and indians, poor and rich.
Already finding a taxi at the bus station was not easy. Even harder to find a hotel. The one recommended in my guide did not exist anymore, so the taxi driver recommend me one, that looked dubious from outside but turned to be quite okay from the inside. Only the airconditioner was really noisy, so I turned it off at night 😞
I arrived Saturday morning, 29th of January 2010, and after getting some sleep I met Eva and Miguel for a ride with the Tranvia. It was fun, although very difficult to understand the guide. Miguel laughed a lot 😊
In the evening we went for Patacones - delicious. And we met Miguels cousin Rafael. They brought me to my hotel and were shocked by the look of the place.
On Sunday I moved to Miguels aunt apartment, where she offered me to stay for the same price like in the hotel. On the day we went to the laguna Sinamaica with Rafael. What was pretty different to the city Maracaibo. We saw the
tranvia
Eva in front of the cathedral strow huts built on palitos from the indians and Rafael got a good deal with the boat driver to bring us to San Carlos, on the other side of the lake, where we - again thanks to the convincing arguments of Miguel and Rafael - visit the fortress with a little private tour of the guard. Afterwards we shortly went to the beach and for a swim before e returned to the city and Rafael invited us to have dinner in his house.
On Monday Eva and Miguel prepared a delicious breakfast with pancakes and fresh fruits. Afterwards we went to see the old part of the town. With its colourful houses its a very beautiful part, sad just that nobody maintains them. We also visit the presidents palace. Eva was Chavez and I was vicepresident for some moments 😊
In the evening we went to this pizzeria "El Padrino" to have pizza there, which was delicious. Unfortunately that we got robbed there that night. Scary moments which are not worth to talk about.
On Tuesday another aunt of Miguel gave us a tour through the new city center of Maracaibo. We couldnt really enjoy it, still in
patacones
Delicious Patacon Burger shock from yesterday night. In the evening Eva and Miguel left to Caracas. I wanted to leave the next day but I stayed a little longer.
Rafael helped me to get the bus ticket to Santa Marta, but the office was closed. I got to know Paulina who lives in the house of Rafael. And the girl that worked for Miguels aunt Maria-Eugenia.
One day I went to Altagracias with the ferry and from there with a bus to a beach. I had a swim and talked to some fishermen. It was funny and beautiful.
I left Maracaibo on Saturday, the 6th of February 2010. The trip was horrible. Not only that I was the first person in the place where the bus should leave and there was nobody except some guards. I played domino with them to spend the time. Like half an hour before the bus should leave, the office opened and I could buy the ticket, which was no problem. But it took another hour for the bus to arrive and a woman was complaining about something all the time. On the ride we had to pay 4 times to the police!!! How corrupted! At
laguna
la laguna sinamaica the border I had only enough time to get the leave- and entry-stamp in my passport. No time to eat or change money. So I arrived tired, exhauted and annoyed in Santa Marta without money. Luckily the taxi driver drove me to the hostel and the hostel paid for it. ... next entry ...
Thanks to Eva for the pictures!
