After saying my goodbyes to Ashley in Rio, I boarded a plane to Montevideo in Uraguay to meet up with Valen, my Canadian friend from Toronto that I met in Mancora, Peru and travelled all the way to Cuzco with. I spent my first day in Montevideo walking around the city. Montevideo is also another beautiful South American city, lots of plazas and beautiful buildings. The next day, Valen arrived, as well as Iona and Heidi, who she had been travelling with. That night, we went out for an amazing steak dinner (seems to be a recurring pattern for me in South America) in the Mercado by the port with Steve and Greg, who we had met at the hostel we were staying at, Hostel Red. The waiter even threw in some local wine for us to try. After dinner, we headed to bar near a salsa club for a few drinks. The waiter there took us to the salsa club that we were looking for. The club had a massive tree in the middle of it! They built the club around the tree, how cool! The club was a very interesting scene, but not really my kind of thing (i.e.
I can't salsa dance). However, it was fun to watch the locals dance and see what their party scene is like.
Something else I did before leaving Montevideo was to extend my flight by two months. I was supposed to go home on November 29th out of Buenos Aires, but after much decision, I decided to extend my flight until the end of January. It was a hard decision to miss Christmas at home, but I realized that I hadn't given myself nearly enough time to see Argentina properly, and Argentina was the country that I had been looking forward to the most. So, the flight has been changed to go home at the end of January!
The next day (my birthday!) we all boarded a bus to Punta del Este . . what a great way to spend my birthday, on the beach with a fun group of people. Went down to the beach and enjoyed the sun for a few hours. Then, we went out for dinner at a cute little Italian place around the corner from our hostel. Heidi, Valen, Iona, Steve and Matt suprised me with some chocolcate and dulce de leche cake! How
Lunch at Bobo's . .
Taking back the perv. sweet. The whole restuarant sang happy birthday, it was really nice. One of the best laughs of the evening was that this older man (seriously, he couldn't have been any younger that 80) came up to me and said Happy Birthday to me, then gave one of the guys the thumbs up sign. Ah . . South American men - they don't grow up, they just get older. After dinner we went to a fun little Irish Bar and had a few drinks. The next day, it was raining, so we really didn't do much (Punta del Este is a beach town). We hung out in a cafe most the day, had a good chat, lots of good banter going on, Steve and Greg are from Essex and full of jokes. Valen and I seemed to laugh at anything they say, love the accents!
After that, we took the bus and ferry back to Buenos Aires (except for Heidi, who decided to stay in Uraguay), and checked into Tango Inn in Palermo. I stayed at Millhouse my first time in Buenos Aires, and while this was also a great hostel, the location of Tango Inn (in Palermo!!!) cannot be beat . . its only one block away from my favourite restaurant in Buenos Aires, Bobo. Our first night in Buenos Aires, the remaining five of us went out for a great meal and to a pub. The next day, the boys left Buenos Aires, and Valen, Iona and I walked around the city, went shopping, and of course, back to Bobo, for the delicious food. We also went out to a tango lesson at night. It was fun to learn more about the dance. The next day, we also went back to Bobo before heading out our seperate ways . . me to Mendoza, and Valen and Iona to the Falls.
