We took an overnight bus from Porto Alegre, Brasil to Montevideo, Uruguay. It is unusual, but we had the unfortunate luck to go through intensive customs. No rubber gloves, but they woke everybody up, unloaded the baggage and made us get in line for a search. Uruguay gets mixed reviews, but I thought it was great. Montevideo is packed with beautiful indie-rockers. We stayed in the big central plaza and got our first taste of the vampiric nature of Uruguayans and Argentines. They go to dinner at 10:30, a bar at midnight, then dance clubs until 6am. Great town, great people.
