Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

5 pm, the gold mining town and jungle port of Puerto Maldonado. Tucked inside the Amazon basin, the heat here is stifling. Sat on a bed, one eye on the TV watching Rocky V, one eye out of the window, taking in the mighty rio Madre de Dios. We’ve just spent 3 days and nights in the jungle, and reflecting upon it, I seem to have mixed feelings about this particular excursion. Entering the jungle is something I’ve been looking forward to for so long now. Of all the things we have planned on this trip, the jungle for me has [View Full Entry]

The Amazon Trip Tuesday 13th Left Cuzco at 6am to fly to Puerto Maldonaldo and then our group of 16 enjoyed a 3.5 hour motorised canoe trip up the Amazon to the Libertador Tambopata Eco Lodge. The scenery along the banks of the river was great with palm trees and banana trees plus lots of other tropical vegetation. We spotted caiman, heron, the largest rodents in the world (can’t remember its name), plus lots more. The Lodge was great. We all had our own rooms, 2 per bungalow, under a thatched vaulted roof with hot showers (heated by solar panels), and [View Full Entry]

Entering Peru was a bit of a shock after the varied and generally colourful landscapes of Colombia and Ecuador. As soon as we crossed the mountainous border into the north, we dropped down to the coastal desert, which stretches all the way down the country to the West of the Andes. Frankly, it's a bleak, sunblasted and windblown place, the monotony of the endless sand landscapes being livened up only by the frequent piles of landfill at the side of the Pan American Highway, and the occasional semi-ruined shack or building. The towns in this region, which are well off the [View Full Entry]

Getting Sorted South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Lima
We have picked the route and realize that we are bound for highh altitude and cold weather. There are very few certainties. One we think for sure is that the two week estimation for time needed to complete this adventure is a bit unrealistic. Most locals think it will take over 5 days via motortaxi to get from Huancayo to Cuzco which we estimate is only about one fifth of our journey. And in terms of terrain 0 although slow going 0 likely the best chance at smooth riding. We opted out the balmier brazilian rainforest for a few reason. One [View Full Entry]

Que tal chicos! So while I’m sure that all of you were watching the Badger game this past Saturday, I was enduring quite a rivalry myself…..between me…..and the deepest canyon in the world, the Colca Canyon. It was quite a tough adventure (and I have lots of blisters and sore muscles to prove it), pero se vale la pena (but it was worth it). Desiree, who is another exchange student from La Catolica, and I left Thursday afternoon from Lima on a 16 hour bus ride to Arequipa. It sounds worse than it was. These are high tech buses with GPS [View Full Entry]
