We took a ferry tour of Lake Titicaca and visited Taquile Island for a delicious Titicaca Trout lunch and then visited the famous Uros Floating Islands. Whole communities live on massive floating islands made out of 2m thick layer of reeds. The reeds need to be replaced every few months, usually new reeds are laid on top and the rotting ones pushed to the bottom. The reeds used for a variety of handicrafts and also a food source to the people of Lake Titicaca. Some reed islands are so big that they hold whole communities including medical centres, shops and schools. The islands need to be anchored because during storms currents can take them across the border of Peru and Bolivia which runs through the centre of this massive lake. It was amazing to see people still living in this amazingly unique way.
