The individual reeds are tied very tightly together in many layers. The boats are totally watertight. Designs at the front and back of the boat can consist of virds, dragons or fanciful arrangements.

The woman removed her hat for the collection of pesos. She manouvered the reed boat from one island to another. By rotating the pole from left to right she was able to make her way thru the water. The reed boat is glossy, soft, smooth to the touch and absolutely water tight. It was a tranquil ride ... no motor noise

In the courtyard behind the restaurant ducks, chickens, dogs and cats roamed about as if in a barnyard only here there is no sand to scratch and no grass to scurry thru.

On the reed island were arranged wood frame houses with walls of reed and roves of corrugated metal. These houses served as small kiosks, restaurant, and dellings for the people working in the shops. In a courtyard behind the ressataurant this laundry facility had been set up.

THe toilet was there ... the need was there ... and all was flushed ... into the lake!

After an innteresting and rewarding day, the motor boat returned all the people in our group to Puno. The mystery of how one lives and builds fire on water has been solved by observing the ingenuity of the indigeonous people of Lake TitiKaka.

The telephone was a delight to all and a picture of a reed phone booth could not be left unshot.
