Iquitos can only be reached by air or boat (no roads) so there are only the rickshaws and hardly any cars as they cant really go more than 10 miles and then no further. Its not an island just the vastness of different rivers. These rivers swell by up to a couple of miles wider than in the dry season so no possibility of building any bridges either.
