This was a long day. Not only tired from the flight and lack of sleep, etc., we had to get up early (5 AM) to get the taxi to the train, which would take us to MachuPicchu through the sacred valley. We definitely took the most comfortable route, in the Vista Dome train, with other foreign tourists. Our seats were at the front of the rear car - kinda crappy, cause most of the view ended up being behind us. But, it was definitely worth the extra cost for larger (and cleaner) windows, and windows on the roof. The trip out offered great views - of Cusco, and surrounding countryside, and spectacular mountains and cloud forest from within the sacred valley. 4 hours after leaving the city, we disembarked at Agues Calientes (hot springs at the ... read more

It was like the ice-creams in Dumbos, it was as good, if not better than we expected! And for the first time ever i was actually speachless!! We caught a train to Aguas Callientes (litterally meaning hot water thanks to the natural hot springs found there) At 6am from Cusco and arrived at around 3ish. The train ride was surprisingly nice, well the parts we were awake for were, the scenery was beautiful although i did spot a magot infested dog carcas on the side of the tracks! Aguas Callientes was just as beautiful with imposing mountain ranges surrounding the town and jungle encrouching on it. We went in search of somewhere to stay for the night and looked around and came across the most popular haunt, Gringo Bills, but us unsuspecting gringos quickly headed straight ... read more

After a few hours sleep, we rose to catch an early bus (a short walk from our hostel) up to the ruins. We got up to the entrance at about 7 am. The horizontal Rays of the early morning sun gave a real atmosphere to the forest-covered mountains. The mountains surrounding Aguas Calientes are really steep, and completely covered in cloud forest... they make quite a contrast to the dry rocky mountains surrounding Olly. We opted to take a guided tour of the ruins, so we'd know a bit of the background behind what we were looking at. Entering the sight was truly amazing! The sight of this ancient citadel nesting on the top of a mountain surrounded by genuinely spectacular scenery is just awe inspiring! (as you can see from the photos). The tour took ... read more

Oh how I love you, walking stick Whose loyalty shall never sway Together always through tink and thick Hail my feet savior, each day With three soles it began, Beautiful cover, colors galore Riding my pack out of hand Soon amigo, I'll need you ever more Your time came and without fail Selfless, restless, guardian angel Pounding, jarring, each step on the trail Stitches stretched, worries quelled Broken, duty done faithfully Return my friend, reincaranate My gift, cosmetic surgery Forever my finger puppet ************************** So obviously, I had too much free time today sipping coffee and doing laundry. Aguas Calientes is a wonderful town and I wish I had more time to spend here. Instead, me and the Buns just lounge around town. Well, the early morning wake-up to beat the rush was well worth it. We hiked in the dark for about an hour to reach the Sun Gate where we had our bird's eye view onto fog. I don't think I've ever woken up this early before to see fog, but yes fog exists at 6AM. Sarcasm aside, it really was worth it because as the sun rose, the fog dissipated and this stone fortress appeared out of nowhere. That's a great way to see Machu Picchu for the first time. It's the reason to do the 4 day trek and not the 4 hour train ride to Machu Picchu. The one downside of doing Machu Picchu this way, however, is that once you get there, you're kinda tired. Like everyone else, I just wanted to get ... read more

We woke up at 5:30 because we were to be shuttled to the bus that would take us to the train that would take us to Machu Picchu. We were excited, but tired. We arrived at Macchu Picchu at around 11:30, along with half the world, it seemed. It was very crowded, so we took a different route to explore the famous Incan ruins. This proved to be a good choice because we were alone for the first half of the exploration. Of course, I took like 200 pictures. It really was amazing to see. It was not the spiritual experience I had hoped for due to the crowds. If anyone is planning to do this, take the train into Aguas Calientes the night beofre so that you can get into the park before all of ... read more

Amazing...that's the only way to describe Machu Picchu! People kept telling me how cool it was, but until you go there you don't ever realize how right they were. I left Cusco by train for the town of Aguas Calientes. Aguas Calientes is the last town before Machu Picchu (if you can even call it a town, it was about 2 square blocks in size nestled in the Sacred Valley). The following day we hiked up to Machu Picchu to catch the sunrise and beat most of the other tourists. There are shelves of books attempting to tell the history of Machu Picchu and what it used to be used for. Some say it could be the lost city of the Incas, or the city of the virgins of the sun, or a summer hangout for ... read more

At just after 7am the blinding rays of the sun forked above the towering mountain overlooking the ancient lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu. A few of us gathered at the site of the original sundial, which captured the falling rays, its only blemish being a corner missing, carelessly knocked off by a visiting film crew some years ago. We wandered around the maze of largely empty buildings and terraces and breathed in the quiet spirituality exuding from every nook and cranny. The location is simply out of this world, majestic beyond belief. It has to be our top site/highlight of our trip around the world! The Taj Mahal was special, the temples of Angkor in Cambodia were even more spectacular and extensive, but Machu Picchu comes out top, in more ways than one! Machu ... read more

We made it! It is kind of surreal to finally be there after this long trek. It feels like we´ve been on the trail for much longer than only 3 days. This morning we woke up at 3:00 am to race into the dark to be one of the first at the Sun gate. Andre was actually the first there with two other´s from our group. What an amazing sight... Machu Picchu´s beauty is inexplicable!... read more
