Saturday 18th June
Well, I am starting to really love it here.
I went back to the market in Pisaq with the Italian doctors today. There are so many nice trinkets there, just not enough space in my bag. We were there with hermana Matilde, one of the nuns that runs the clinic. She tells me that the market there is really expensive compared to Cusco. So I didn't buy anything more. I did see some balaclava/masks that were pretty cool. But I think there were better ones in Cusco market, The only thing is that they had ones with this big huge nose, I think I would have to wear it back so not to get it crushed! Customs should be fun wearing that!
It was nice to go around and look at things though. The doctors are very good at haggling I must say! I think I'll have another look around the market in Cusco this week and see whats good.
I got back to the clinic after we had a lovely lunch in Pisaq. I soon got bored sitting in my room so took a walk into town. The other girls from Newcastle are off to
Ollantaytamba really early tomorrow so weren't up for much of a night out so I was a bit of loser and went out by myself. I'm pretty sure I know my way into town now, I just wouldn't walk it back when its dark. I managed to get some suncream as well in a chemist. I shouldn't run out now! I didn't fancy buying things so heading straight to the Irish Bar (Paddys Bar) in the main plaza. It was my first time in, for some reason. And they had old speckled hen and Abbot Ale on tap! Not irish at all mind but me likey. So I got a pint of abbot and sat down. Not the best abbot ale I've ever had. They had loads of crap on the wall so it did feel like an irish bar.
By some weird coincidence I sat next to a group of doctors from Ireland that were just finishing their travels. They had worked in Australia for a 6 months and then travelled round South America for another 6 months. They are away home on Tuesday. They are all getting ready to start their specialist training in Dublin so were
getting ready for some paperwork when they got home. It was good craic being that weirdo that sits in bar on their own and chats to people.
When they left I went out to the main square and there was some stage on with a band and some dancers. I stood and watched for a while but then realised I was hungry. A week of being overfed buy the nuns makes you expect the food! So I took a walk around the square and found a restaurant that did sandwiches. That was all I wanted like so I had one of the seats on the balcony, on my own. Table for one. Loser eh? But it overlooked the whole square and that band was still on. It was nice just people watching with my sandwich and cocktail, classy. When the band finished, they played some music in between and beyonce came on. By that stage, I really wanted to get my groove on but thought that was too far. And got a taxi home. Chatting away to taxi man, I'm getting more confident with my Spanish now. And it helped that he knew exactly where he was going, unlike
last night! So my romantic night by myself ended early. And I am now listening to the constant dog fights in the street (there are dogs everywhere, which doesn't sound that mad, but I mean loads. Everywhere. Last night when I got the taxi we went a really stupid way and there were packs of dogs roaming the random streets, pure zombie shit.)
Oh also, got another compliment about my spanish today. From the guy who drove us to Pisaq earlier. He asked me the meaning of my name and I attempted to tell him the story of Deirdre of the Sorrows. In Spanish!! Effort points right there!
Sunday 19th June
Sorry to those people hoping that I would be skyping today. The clinic has been pretty much abandoned and if no one is in the office the main computer is off. And I don’t have a key so the internet is off. So I gave up mid-morning and went off into town to see if anything is happening. I also wanted to buy a mirror. I sound like a poser but I am using a tv as a mirror(switched off obvs) and I don’t think I’m really
getting my hair right. There was a guy selling wee mirrors the other day but I couldn’t find him today.
Well there were loads of dancing and giant float things in town. So wandered around a bit. Then decided I was hungry and decided to fine that Jacks cafe that the Irish girls told me about last night. I bumped into Dara, the other medical student while I was on the way. I said I was going there for lunch, and I don’t remember the words I used exactly but I wanted to invited her to join me. But I’m not sure I did. And ended up going alone. Despite being a weirdo again the food was amazing. As well as the milkshake. I will definitely be going back despite it being not the cheapest place I’ve ate in. Buy not cheap I mean it was nearly £6.00 for giant burger and chips and gorgeous milkshake. I was sitting next to the cakes and if I had had room, I would have had one but I couldn’t finish my food as it was.
After that, I went wandering round and found a sign for a flat to rent, which might
be a good idea for when Eoghan gets here. So I took the number and will give them a ring. Its a really central location so I’m worried that it will be expensive but it will probably work out cheaper than hostelling. I don’t think it would be fair to ask the nuns to put up Eoghan as he can’t really volunteer here. and he doesn’t speak much spanish. And it’s a good 20minute walk into town at least.
Anyway, I let you all know how I get on when I go off to the countryside with the Italian Gynecologists.
