Anna Karina and Fatima
These are the girls we had outside. They were exhausted after some fresh air!! Hi Folks,
The new Volunteer (Susan) arrived at breakfast this morning. An older lady from Canada. I met her around 8am just after I had appeared from my room ready to go to work. She was very chatty and attempted a long conversation with me. Will need to explain to her that I just don´t do mornings and that it takes me at least an hour before I´m capable of civility!!!
Back to work today and back to the orphanage. When I arrived this morning I had the feeling that I´d really missed the kids. Hadn´t seen them since Thursday last week as I´d been at the prison on Friday.
We arrived to find the majority of them pretty much washed and dressed. One of the tiny little babies was crying in her cot. I immediately went to her and started to rub her back in an effort to calm her down. One of the ladies said I should lift her and put her in one of the prams. Did this and moved the pram back and forward until she fell asleep. Again - very limited human contact for the wee ones.
Started folding nappies and then
My favourite - Jorge
He was too curious about the camera to actually smile, but is normally full of fun and mischief!! breakfast arrived. It was a boiled egg and some apple juice for each of them. We had to break up the eggs and mash them up in their food bowls. Vicki (the lady in charge is also called Vicki) added something to each of the bowls before the kids were fed. Discovered that this was salt - and not merely a pinch either!! Managed to feed three of the older kids at breakfast - getting better, but a lot of it is the luck of which baby you get and how tired or hungry they are!! After breakfast, finished folding the nappies and then Vicki (volunteer Vicki) and I took Fatima and Anna Karina outside for some air which was nice. Gave us the chance to have a chat too.
The sun started to move and there was little shade (sombre en Espanol), so we took the girls back upstairs. The kids were all up and about either in baby walkers or playng with toys. At one point Jorge and Fatima were about to fall asleep about half an hour before lunch. We were told that they had to be kept awake. Have you ever tried to keep a
Jorge - Full length
Isn´t he gorgeous?? number of bone tired children with their eyes almost crossing awake for half an hour?? Vicki and I couldn´t see what harm letting them have a snooze would have done, but then we are only there to help.
As a result, we were trying to force feed these kids their lunch. They were so tired they just weren´t interested!! Lunch today was the same soup and some sort of apple dessert that smelled absolutely delicious!!
Immediately after lunch, all of them (except Fernando) went down for a nap. This left us with very little to do, but by then it was almost time for us to leave.
Took some photos of the kids today and have attached them. None of the smaller babies as they are rarely out of their cots. Hope that you enjoy them!
Headed back to base for lunch, and then Vicki and I headed into town to pick up a few things. Went on a hunt for shower gel and was successful, although we could only find one pharmacy that stocks it. They have the majority of brands you see at home here - Dove, Palmolive etc but just not the same
Fernando
He is lovely - has just learned to walk and always remind me of the Abba song. ranges of the brand products.
Had two lovely surprises this afternoon. One was a copy of the Church magazine from Fiona which I have printed off and taken home to read. Didn´t realise my contribution was quite so long - apologies!!!!!!! I also had an e-mail from my friend Mhairi who had been on a business trip to Israel and got to visit Jerusalem. She described all the places she visited - especially the spot where Jesus was crucified on Golgotha hill which is apparently no longer outside the city walls. I really appreciated it as she knew how much it would mean to me. Both of these just made my day!!
Found some time to catch up on the Church magazine befire my warm shower and then dinner. Note that there will be an opportunity for my New Govan friends to donate to a Peruvian charity at the hogmanay ceilidh (can´t believe I won´t be there with you all, and will miss the party at Karen´s after!!). Just wanted to let you know in advance that this is much appreciated. There are many children in need over here and any donations you make at all will go
Joser
He cries a bit more than the rest, but generally pretty good natured. Not quite steady on his feet yet, but trying hard!! a long way to help them!!
After dinner, Vicki and I showed the new volunteers the delights of Gringo Plaza over a beer (for me) or pisco sour for the others. Headed home and straight to bed.
Can´t believe I only have 11 more days here - really don´t feel like I´m ready to leave yet!!
To my cousin Sandra - you are so lucky not to have smelly e-mail. Believe me - nothing could describe the smell!! To be fair, the cheese stalls are the worst culprits!!!!
To Vicki´s Mark - considering putting an offer in for the house as a holiday home in Ayacucho :-). Just need to find some reliable builders which might be a bit of a challenge out here!! All quotes/tenders will be considered!!
That´s all for today folks.
Take care!
