We ended up in Arequipa on recommendations from a few people to visit the nearby Colca Canyon. The city itself didn’t really blow us away but the views around it were impressive. All around are looming volcanoes that have shaken and rocked this place many times of the year. Buildings on the main square are made from volcanic ash and sillar (volcanic rock) so the locals have clearly become accustomed to living side by side with Mother Earth. I visited a museum one afternoon (John is DONE with museums) because I had heard some good things about it. I wasn’t allowed to take my camera in so have no photos unfortunately. The museum presents the story of Juanita, the Ice Princess. It seems that the natives here have been living side by side with Mother Earth ... read more

From Nazca I got on the bus headed for Arequipa...arriving first thing in the morning. After some food and a shower it was time to explore, heading for the monestry which was huge, and beautifully maintained. After some lunch at a cute little cafe in a Melbourne-like lane way, it was off to visit the mummy museum where an exhibit of the ice girl (Juanita) who was found not too long after after a volcanic eruption freed her from her tomb, was on display, It was quite a confronting exhibition, but very interesting. In the evening we met up with Lili and Renee (friends from Nazca) and had dinner up a few stories at a rooftop restaurant which looks over the beautiful Arequipa Plaza de Armas. After checking out the night life it was back to ... read more

The journey over from Puno to Arequipa was simply stunning, with the road rising to way over 4,000m and passing lakes and volcanic, snow-capped mountains one of which is known as "El Misti". There were thousands of Alpacas and Llamas roaming around and we were lucky enough to see some herds of wild Vicunas, like a cross between a camel and a deer but sadly now an endangered species. In what felt in the middle of nowhere is Arequipa, a sprawling city nestled inbetween mountains. Arequipa was just a stop off en-route to Colca Canyon but definitely worth a visit for the beautiful monastery built from white Volcanic stone and the sunset over the city is really something to see. At 3,181m deep, the Colca Canyon is the 2nd largest canyon in the world and the ... read more

After extricating myself from the clutches of La Paz, I made my way to Colca Canyon in an effort to purify myself by trekking in the wild environs of southern Peru. This canyon is actually deeper than the Grand Canyon and only plays second fiddle to one other canyon which also slithers its way through a nearby region in Peru, albeit a little more remotely located. Joining me on this trekking endeavour were some great people that I ran into whilst walking around the streets of Arequipa, recognising them as members of the bar staff from my hostel in La Paz. After a brief discussion, we all realised that we had the same aim of escaping party central in La Paz and restoring a healthy balance to our lives by going trekking. After having a conversation ... read more

One of the joys of travelling without a fixed itinerary, is taking a delightful side trip. Often these can be the highlight of a trip. So on the recommendation of our Lima travel agent, we departed Arequipa for a two day trip to the deepest canyon in the world at 3,000 metres (9,842 feet), the Colca Canyon. The drive out was interesting as we departed on the Interoceanic Highway. It stretches from the Coast of Brazil to the Coast of Peru and it cost of US$2,000 million to build. The first thing I observed was that for the first 10 kilometres out of Arequipa our bus had climbed, twisted and turned more than a 10 hour bus ride in Argentina. Our guide (Ebber) gave us a commentary of what we would see along the way. The ... read more

We flew into Arequipa after being told that it was a ‘nice’ place to visit, and so it was. It is more than just a place to stopover to acclimatise to the higher altitudes to come, even though it does serve this purpose admirably being 2325 metres above sea level. We stayed just off the main square which proved a good location. The main square is substantial and very pretty. It is bordered on three sides by double story buildings with large verandas and on the fourth side by a church. We enjoyed walking around the square and observing the ‘goings-on’ each day. On our first day Eileen was unwell and so I went to lunch alone. I sat on the balcony upstairs overlooking the square and I felt like Ernest Hemmingway. I had a whole ... read more

On the bus to Arequipa i was literall sat next to a guy who slept with his arms like wings! He literally took up so much space. Also my spanish is not particularly good but i think he tried to get me to wear a jacket to help him smuggle cocaine..... he may have just been trying to keep me warm but who knows! Again we arrived at like 4am and hit the hay then woke up at about 10 to try and see some culture for a change. Arequipa has a huge monastery, two blocks worth, and has loads of other small ones. So we were gonna go and check some of these out, except they cost a fiver for entry, so we just went and sat on a terrace and had pisco sours. Me ... read more

Last few days in Arequipa have been really nice and relaxed....did some walking round the various parts of the city and spent some quality time sitting on park benches and people watching. The weather has continued to be sunny and hot during the day, so have made the most of basking in the sunshine! There have been a couple more demonstrations in Arequipa over the past few days (I am going to miss all this passion), as well as Arequipa's answer to Kurt Cobain making a public appearance and there was a music video being shot near the tennis courts a couple of days ago (unfortunately I didn't have my camera for that one). With sadness I will be saying farewell to my hostel drinking buddies....however my liver is looking forward to the no alcohol for ... read more

Thursday 7th June Last day in Cusco...following the early rises from the previous days, I thought I was going to get a long lie in...no chance! I was up at 6am, so decided to tackle the packing ahead of my departure to Arequipa later this evening. So rather than putting my dirty clothes to a laundry, I have instead re-packed everything so that the clean clothers are easier to access...I am sure my new washing machine back home can cope with the Peruvian dust no problem. Today is an unexpected surprise, there is a local Christian festival. So I arrived in the town square at 9:30am and got a prime spot to watch the parade and listen to the sermon and beautiful signing (what a turn for the books considering my lack of christian faith other ... read more
