Just returned to Lima by the night bus from Huaraz(didn´t sleep much). Splurged on the bed bus though I still couldn't sleep. I kept waking up and seeing theses cones bordering the switchbacks whizzing by in a blur. I just didn't want to know what was happening out there! The cordillera blanca region is truly spectacular. Did not stay in Huaraz, which was clearly the tourist center of the ar... Read Full Entry

Rented a combi up to the mountain lakes. Lots of farming on these steep slopes. Potato fields in bloom are stunning against the green green grass.

the road that goes back to the second lake. I preferred the first lake, much more impressive. We hiked around a couple of hours, though I could have stayed all day.

We´re at 4000 meters here at the lake. But, remember, we are 13 degrees south of the equator -- this is a tropical forest! You look up and see immense glaciers coming down at you. Truly a magical place.

Zoe B. Mono enjoys a view. She was very naughty today. She jumped out of the sack on our hike and we had to go back and look for her.

Cows at the lake. Now, I love cows, grew up on a farm, but not sure it is a good idea to have them grazing in this national park. Have seen a lot of environmental destruction due to overgrazing.

Hanging at Caraz, on our way back from the lakes. This is the town Mercedes grew up in. She said it´s location was one of the few places that was not terrorized by the Shining Path in the 80s.

I wanted to order chicken, but the restaurant owner refused, saying I could get chicken in Lima. He made me get the trout and boy was I a happy camper!

In 1970 an earthquake brought down a big section of mountain and glacier and destoyed the town of Yunguay. The entire town is buried under 7 meters of earth and rock. It all happened in 3 minutes. Most of the people in the small town were of course killed instantly. Some guy said that in the total area, 70,000 people died. The photo shows what was left of an immense cathedral. Oddly, the cathedral saved four of the 36 palms in the cental square. It happened on a Sunday so about 90 residents were at the graveyard that is on a hill overlooking the city. Luckily they survived, but sadly what they witnessed could only have been sheer horror.

delicioso
Bob here. I didn't have the Guinea pig, but I'm told they're quite tasty. There are boatloads of them in Peru, none is being raised as a pet.
