The Malecon 2000
During one of our walks in the city After a nice bus ride out of Montanita, we arrived into Guayaquil at around 5pm. We caught a cab with Miguels new friend Diane and went to her place. There just happened to be a McDonalds near by so we couldn’t help ourselves haha. It had been 3 and a half weeks since I tasted REAL grease lol. So we dined in style and dignity. :p
After dinner we went back to Dianes place where Ivan picked us up. Ivan is a computer programmer / university student. He is studying for his masters and is taking English classes as well. He was quick to offer us a tour around Guayaquil in his car with our other new friends Bridgette and Karla. Everyone was so nice to us and didn’t hesitate when there was something they could do for us. We were even escorted to Karlas place where she lived with her Mom. They provided us with a bed, hammock, and a hot shower (which we hadn’t seen in quite a while due to being in the jungle and the lack of hot water in Montanita)
We all crammed into Ivans car and went to this major park in Guayaquil

Driving around the city with the girls. My sweetheart Bridgette on the right. Wudup carińo!! called The Malecon 2000. It was built only a few years ago and it was spectacular. It’s situated on the widest river in Guayaquil. There was a lot of history around us, however, the English signs that explained everything was so bad that it was hard to understand what the hell it was trying to say. Luckily, Ivan knew enough English to explain what we were seeing.
After doing the entire circuit, we went to the 500 step church but decided it was too late and the girls were wearing high heels haha. So we postponed it for one night and returned to Karlas place for some much needed rest.
The next day Miguel and I wanted to see a bit of the city so we jumped on a bus and made our way to central Guayaquil. We saw a huge mall so we went in to get some lunch and catch a movie. The mall was extremely Americanized! There were so many English stores it was kinda weird since we hadn’t seen anything like this since we left Vancouver in October!
It was here that I lost my bankcard so I had to start using the

Palm trees everywhere! Bank of San Miguel haha. I’m very much in debt to him right now…I keep pulling money out lol.
We then returned to Karlas and met up with Bridgette, Katty and Ivan there. We went back to The Malecon to do the steps. Each step is numbered 1 to 444. The girls had more appropriate footwear on this time haha. The climb was great and there was a spectacular church and view at the top. We could see most of Guayaquil; and it was at night which made the pictures even better!
After we got back down to the bottom we went for dinner. I ended up ordering this sandwich that tasted a bit off but paid no mind to it due to the fact that I was so hungry. It turns out that the mayonnaise was bad and I paid the price for that the next day. Luckily Karlas mom was very helpful in aiding my recovery. After a day of rest and a home-cooked lunch, Miguel and I decided it was time to move on to another city. We packed up and went to the mall for dinner with our friends one last time. We went

A statue of an important connection in the history of the city...that's about all I know haha to Tony Romas and after smelling all the food around me I ran to the bathroom and lost my home-cooked lunch haha. I felt a bit better after that which was good because I was about to face an 8 hour bus ride to Vilcabamba!
After the mall we went back to Karlas one last time to grab our stuff. Bridgette, Karla and Karlas mom were kind enough to escort us to the bus station to make sure we got on the right bus and make sure we did it safely as the Guayaquil terminal isn’t the safest place for Gringos at night. We said our goodbyes and thanked all of them so much for being so nice and for showing us their city. Bridgette and Karla got us parting gifts; some candy, a letter written in English and a little Ecuadorian flag which was PERFECT because I was planning on getting a flag from each country I visit. It was nice to receive my first one as a gift from such good people! So with that, we were off. Another bus, another city, another experience.
